You may have to do a bit of hunting to beat out all those other power-hungry travelers! This accessory allows you to extend the life of your iPod touch battery by five times or more. You can buy them for about US $40 65. Search for external iPod touch battery on the Web to find the latest and greatest options. If you are using your iPod touch heavily for phone calls during the day, you may want to invest in a car charger or another way to give it a little more juice in the middle of a long day. These chargers plug directly into the cigarette lighter socket in your car and run about US $15 25. If you are taking a long car trip, you can buy a power inverter to convert your 12V car power outlets into a power outlet where you can plug in your iPod touch charger. Do a Web search for power inverter for cars to find many options for under US $50. This is a small price to pay for hours of enjoyment on your iPod touch! As we mentioned, you can also charge your iPod touch in many accessories designed to do other things, like play your music over speakers. Just look for the plug or lightning bolt icons to make sure your iPod touch is charging in such accessories. CHAPTER 1: Getting Started
iTunes and Your iPod touch
Now that you've taken your iPod touch out of the box and learned how to get the most out of your battery, you are ready to start enjoying it. Connecting it to iTunes is the next step. iTunes allows you to activate and register your iPod touch and tie it to your Apple ID (iTunes account). Once you do that, you can buy songs, movies, books, and just about anything else right from your iPod touch or in iTunes on your computer. You can also use iTunes to load up your music and videos and to back up your iPod touch and later restore it. If you don t have iTunes, you'll need to install the latest version (10 at time of writing). Do You Need to Activate Your iPod touch
You need to connect your iPod touch to iTunes to activate it if you see a black screen like the one here, showing a USB cable plugging into iTunes. If that's the case, skip to the iTunes and Your iPod touch section later in this chapter to find out how to get your iPod touch going. Slide to Unlock and Your Home Screen
After your iPod touch has been activated, you'll see the Slide to Unlock screen, as shown in Figure 1 2. Touch your finger to the screen and follow the path of the arrow to slide the unlock button to the right. When you do that, you'll see the Home screen. Notice that the four icons locked in the Bottom Dock (Figure 1 2, bottom right) don't move while the rest of the icons can move back and forth in pages. Check out our Moving Icons section in 7 to learn how to move your favorite icons into the Bottom Dock.
