Figure 10-22. The timeline editor with a keyframe recorded at the 0- and 1-second marks Look at the XAML, and notice that the rectangle contains an empty version of the CompositeTransform, highlighted in bold, which Silverlight provides: <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <Rectangle x:Name="rectangle" Fill="#FFF4F4F5" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Height="108" Margin="28,22,0,0" Stroke="Black" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="109" RenderTransformOrigin="0.5,0.5"> <Rectangle.RenderTransform> <CompositeTransform/> </Rectangle.RenderTransform> </Rectangle> </Grid> An empty transform does nothing to the object being transformed. However, it makes it easy for the animation to affect a specific transform, such as this example does to the TranslateX property of the CompositeTransform: <Storyboard x:Name="rectangleAnimation"> <DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="(UIElement.RenderTransform) .(CompositeTransform.TranslateX)" Storyboard.TargetName="rectangle"> <EasingDoubleKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="0"/> <EasingDoubleKeyFrame KeyTime="0:0:1" Value="205"/> </DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames> </Storyboard> You can change the interpolation for a specific keyframe. The ease-in percentage controls how the property value changes as time advances toward the selected keyframe. The higher the ease-in value, the faster this keyframe is approached as the closer time gets to it. The ease-out functionality is similar, except it controls how the property value changes as time advances away from the current keyframe. The ease-in and ease-out percentages alter the control points for the KeySpline, for which Expression Blend offers a full-blown editor if you click the Properties tab while a keyframe is selected. The KeySpline editor is shown in Figure 10-23.

Figure 10-23. The KeySpline editor in Expression Blend The yellow dots correspond to the control points, which are set to the control points used earlier in the car example. You can click and drag these yellow dots, or change the points by using the sliders (hold the mouse on the x1, y1, x2, and y2 points area and move it left or right) or entering the numbers by hand after clicking one of the sliders. This editor is likely the best option for exploring KeySplines and discovering which control points will accomplish what you are aiming for. If you want to change the repeat count of the animation, you need to drill down into the specific target property being animated. You can do this when in timeline recording mode by repeatedly clicking the arrow button on the left of each object until you arrive at a series of highlighted objects, as shown in Figure 10-24.

This section has introduced what Expression Blend can do to make creating animations easier for you.

As we just learned in the previous chapter, perspective transforms, which were introduced in Silverlight 3, are the next step towards developing 3D Silverlight RIAs. In previous versions of Silverlight, transforms were processed in the x and y axes using the UIElement s RenderTransform property. Starting with the Silverlight 3 version, you can use the PlaneProjection class to render 3D-like effects. All elements that derive from UIElement have the Projection property, which allows the element to simulate transformation in a 3D space. In the following XAML code, we have a simple example of a rotating image using PlaneProjection that simulates 3D-like animation: <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="Black"> <Grid.Resources> <Storyboard x:Name="Rotate" > <DoubleAnimation From="0" To="360" Storyboard.TargetName="p1" Storyboard.TargetProperty="RotationY" RepeatBehavior="Forever" Duration="0:0:5"> </DoubleAnimation> </Storyboard> </Grid.Resources> <Image x:Name="image1" Source="CD.png" Stretch="None"> <Image.Projection> <PlaneProjection x:Name="p1"/> </Image.Projection> </Image> </Grid> In the previous XAML code, I have defined the Storyboard Rotate with DoubleAnimation having its RepeatBehavior set to Forever. The only image control that image1 has is its Projection property, set to PlaneProjection x:Name property to p1. In the code-behind, we need to start the storyboard in the Loaded event of the user control, as follows: Rotate.Begin();
