With Silverlight 4, out-of-browser applications come in two types: sandboxed (partially trusted) and trusted (with elevated trust). The default is sandboxed. Silverlight 4 introduces the new type, trusted. The trusted out-of-browser applications have greater access to local machine resources and devices compared to the sandboxed partially-trusted applications such as: Native integration with the host operating system such as automation support via COM (Windows platform only). Ability to read and write files on the local disk and not restricted to just isolated storage. Cross-domain networking and sockets are allowed without the need of policy files.

All Silverlight applications come with the basics of out-of-browser functionality, but by default the option is not enabled. So, you ll need to enable the functionality. To enable the out-of-browser functionality, right-click the AdvanceFeaturesDemoApp Silverlight project and choose Properties from the menu. Within the Silverlight tab, under the Silverlight build options section, you will see check box Enable running application out of browser. At a minimum, to enable Silverlight 4 applications in the out-of-browser mode, you need to check this check box. When you do so, the Out-of-Browser Settings button gets enabled and you can click it to open a window to set up various parameters and settings for the out-of-browser application, such as shortcut name, application description, and application icons for different screen resolutions, as shown in Figure 11-6.

ADVANCED SILVERLIGHT FEATURES
Installing Out-of-Browser Applications
There are two ways you can perform installation of the out-of-browser enabled Silverlight applications: in-browser install (default of custom installation) and silent install.
In-Browser Install: Default Option
You have to take no extra steps to use the default in-browser installation capability to set up a Silverlight application in the out-of-browser mode. Once you enable the application for out-of-browser mode, just run the project and right-click the application running in the browser. You should see an additional option available (in addition to Silverlight) to enable installation of the application to run in the out-ofbrowser mode (see Figure 11-7).
Figure 11-7. Option to install the Silverlight application onto the computer to enable out-of-browser functionality Next, select the option to install the Silverlight application, and you will see a pop-up user consent window with a default icon image with options to create shortcuts on the desktop and Start menu, as shown in Figure 11-8.
ADVANCED SILVERLIGHT FEATURES
Figure 11-8. Installing the Silverlight application with the appropriate shortcuts You can select or deselect the option to create shortcuts and click OK to install the application. The application will be installed onto your desktop, the appropriate shortcuts with default icons will be created based on your selection to your machine, and the application will be opened in out-of-browser mode, as shown in Figure 11-9. The application contains the default application icon and also shows the window title with the text you populated in the Title property of the ApplicationIdentity section of the AppManifest.xml file.
