The character specifies the kind of formatting that should be applied, and the numeric value specifies the precision. In the case of Listing 16-24, the format component specifies that the fixed-point formatting should be used and that the prevision should be two decimal places. Compiling and running Listing 16-24 produces the following output: Cost per item: 3.333333 Cost per item: 3.33 Press enter to finish You can see from the output that when there is no format component, the float value passed to the composite formatting method is displayed to six decimal places but that when I apply the F2 format component, the value is displayed to two decimal places. You can mix format components and alignment components in a single format item. Here is a simple example, based on Listing 16-24:
