Figure 32-20. Selecting the Employee type Click the Finish button, and then select the Show Data Sources item from the Data menu. This will open a window that will list the available data in the project, which will include the data model we created and the Employee class we just added. Select the Employee item (the one that is at the top of the list, not the one under the NorthwindEntities item), drag it to the Form window on the design surface, and drop it. A series of controls will be added to the surface, as shown in Figure 32-21.

Figure 32-21. Components added to the design surface The gray area at the bottom of the design surface has been added to contain two controls that we will rely on but that are not displayed to the user. The employeeBindingSource is an instance of the BindingSource control, which will associate our data with the grid control (which is the large control added to the main window). The employeeBindingNavigator is an instance of the BindingNavigator control that lets us page through our data. This is done by the toolbar that has been added to the top of the screen.

The large control added to the design surface is a DataGridView control, and it will display our data in a table. The control automatically adds columns for each public property in the data type it will display. You can see that ours has added columns for each of the properties of the Employee class, starting with EmployeeID, LastName, and so on. In this section, we are going to format the control to change the columns it displays and the order in which it displays them. But first, we are going to resize the control. Click the smart tab icon (the small arrow at the top right of the control), and open the pop-up menu, as shown in Figure 32-22.

Figure 32-22. Opening the smart tab menu Click the Dock in Parent Container link at the bottom of the menu. This will expand the control so that it fills the window. We also want to change the way that the columns are displayed so that they are resized to fill the display. Do this by changing the value of the AutoSizeColumnsMode to Fill in the Properties window. Don t worry that the display shows all of the columns packed in tightly. Our next step is to remove the columns we don t want. Click the smart tab arrow again, and select Edit Columns. This will open the Edit Columns dialog box. Use the Remove button to remove columns from the list, and use the up and down arrow buttons to change the order until you have the same columns in the same orders as in Figure 32-23.

Loading the Data
When we dragged the Employee class from the list of data sources onto the design surface, we told the Windows Forms systems what kind of data we wanted to display. Now we need to specify how to get the data itself. We do this in the code-behind file, which you can access by right-clicking Form1.cs in your project and selecting View Code from the pop-up menu. Listing 32-6 demonstrates the changes we need to make, which are shown in bold. Listing 32-6. Loading the Data in the Code-Behind File using System.Windows.Forms; namespace DataApp { public partial class Form1 : Form { // define the EntityFramework context field NorthwindEntities entityContext = new NorthwindEntities(); public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); // set the data source for the data binding employeeBindingSource.DataSource = entityContext.Employees; } } } The first statement defines a new field using the context object created by the data model and creates a new instance; see 30 for more details of the context object. The second statement sets the DataSource property of the employeeBindingSource object. This is the BindingSource control that was added to the design surface and is responsible for managing the data displayed in the grid. I want to display all the Employee records, so I set the property to be the Employees field of the context object.
