Now you can place or move controls on the design surface, and their position will remain fixed when displayed in the browser. Adding the controls is similar to using the design surfaces we saw in the Windows Forms and WPF chapters. Drag the controls on to the surface, and position them so that they are arranged similarly to those shown in Figure 34-6. The Web Forms design surface has some wrinkles. For example, you can t always reposition a control until there are at least two controls on the surface, and the Shift key doesn t select multiple controls. You need to use the Ctrl key to do that. Aside from these minor oddities, you should have little trouble recreating Figure 34-6. If you are having trouble moving a control, try selecting the Set Position Absolute menu item from the Format menu.

You can position and align controls using the Format menu. Web Forms uses a slightly different set of controls from Windows Forms and WPF. The controls tend to be simpler because they have to be converted to HTML that the browser can understand, and there is a definite emphasis on web page like objects, such as images, links, and tables, which is to be expected given the web page model that Web Forms follows. You ll notice that there are fewer controls in this example than the Widows Forms and WPF equivalents. This is partly because we are creating a web page and the browser provides some of the windowing infrastructure for us, such as a Quit item on a menu. We also have fewer components because the feedback to the user for input validation is handled differently in web forms, as you ll see in the Wiring the Controls section later in the chapter.

We need to change the labels so that the significance of each related TextBox control is obvious. Change the Text property for the labels so that the values are (from the topmost control to the bottom) Minutes:, Laps:, Length (m):, Cals/hr:. Notice that the HTML changes each time you edit a control. Some programmers prefer to write the HTML directly and avoid using the design tools. This can be a quicker way to create a program but also tends to create more errors. Once you have made the changes, your design surface should look similar to Figure 34-7.

There are five TextBox controls in this example. The TextBox control can perform double duty as a singleor multiple-line display. Figure 34-8 assigns each of the TextBox controls a number.
