Figure 34-11. Testing the program You can see how much similarity there is between Web Forms and Windows Forms/WPF. The logic of our Web Forms program is expressed as a series of event-handling methods, much like the other user interface technologies we have looked at. This consistency between the different user interface tool kits is very convenient. It means that a little knowledge can go a long way when you switch between technologies. Of course, there are differences between Web Forms and Windows Forms. How can there not be After all, one is used to create web applications, and the other is used to create Windows programs. But the consistency of the underlying design and coding approach emphasizes the similarity and plays down the differences.

In this section, we will look at the first of two approaches to developing data-centric ASP.NET applications using the Web Forms data features. The steps taken to create a Web Forms data application are strikingly similar to the approach taken by Windows Forms and WPF, and since the previous section introduced you to the basics of Web Form controls, I am not going to spend too much time on the details.

We start by creating a new project using the same ASP.NET Empty Web Application template that we used in the previous section. I have named my project DataApp in the code samples download that accompanies this book. We will use an Entity Framework Data Model as the bridge between our program and the database. To do this, follow the steps set out in the Creating the Model section of 30. You must compile your project after you have added the data model. If you don t, then the Web Forms controls won t be able to read the connection information and metadata properly.

Because we selected the empty ASP.NET template, we must add a web form to develop with. Select your project in the Solution Explorer, right-click, and select Add New Item from the pop-up menu. Find the Web Form template in the Web section, set the name to Default.aspx, and click Add to create the item in the project. The HTML Source view will be opened, showing you the basic page structure.

Creating the Web Forms Data Source
We need to create a bridge between the data model and web forms. To do this, switch to the split view, and drag an EntityDataSource control onto the design surface. You can find this control in the Data section of the Toolbox window. When you drop the EntityDataSource control, a smart tag menu appears. Click the Configure Data Source link, as shown in Figure 34-12.
Figure 34-12. Adding and configuring the data source The Configure Data Source dialog box will appear. Select the NorthwindEntities item from the Named Connection list, and ensure that the DefaultContainer name is set to NorthwindEntities as well, as shown by Figure 34-13.
CHAPTER 34 ASP.NET
Figure 34-13. The Configure Data Source dialog box Click the Next button to move to the next configuration section. This is where we can select the classes that we want from the data model. We display the contents of the Employees table, so ensure that Employees is selected for the EntitySetName item and Employee is selected for the EntityTypeFilter item. Also ensure that the Select All option is selected in the main part of the dialog box and that the three options to enable automatic inserts, updates, and deletes are all selected, as shown in Figure 34-14.
