If you open EmployeeDomainService.cs, you will see the methods that have been generated for us. For both of the entity types we selected, there are methods to get the data (GetEmployees and GetOrder), insert new entity objects (InsertEmployee and InsertOrder), update existing objects (UpdateEmployee and UpdateOrder), and, finally, delete objects (DeleteEmployee and DeleteOrder). There are two things of note. By default the GetXXX methods return all the data in a table. This can be a lot of data, and it can be worth filtering the data using a LINQ query in the GetXXX method. If you don t, you run the risk of transferring large amounts of data from the server to the Silverlight client, which may be more than the network or the client can cope with. The second thing to note is that the other methods (InsertXXX, UpdateXXX, and DeleteXXX) are filled out for you but that the changes to the data model are not made permanent in the database without a call to the SaveChanges method. See 30 for details of this method and how to apply it. We are only going to be working with the Employees data, which is why it s called the domain service class, but I wanted to show you how a single service class can be used to provide access to more than one kind of entity data.

Adding data to our Silverlight client is much the same as for the other user interface technologies we have seen in this part of this book. For variety, we will include a Label and a ComboBox, which we will use to filter the employee data that is displayed by city. Open your MainPage.xaml file, and drag your components from the Toolbox to the design surface so that it looks like Figure 35-20. I have created two rows in the Grid control, added a StackPanel to the lower row, and added a Label and a ComboBox to the StackPanel.

The simplest way to add the data we want to our application is by using the Data Sources view, which you can open by selecting Show Data Sources from the Visual Studio Data menu. There should be two data sources available one for the Employee data and one for the Order data, as shown in Figure 35-21.

Configuring the DataGrid Control
First we need to put the DataGrid into the layout properly. To do that, switch to the Properties window, and reset the following properties: Width Height HorizontalAlignment VerticalAlignment Margin Grid.RowSpan
To reset a property, right-click the black diamond to the right of the property name, and select Reset Value from the pop-up list. When all the values have been reset, your DataGrid control should be nicely homed in the top row of the layout Grid.
CHAPTER 35 SILVERLIGHT
Changing the Columns
We also need to change the settings for the columns. By default, they are arranged in alphabetical order. Select the DataGrid on the design surface, and click the ellipsis (...) button in the Columns property value. This will open the Collection Editor dialog box, which we saw in 33. Rearrange the columns so that the first three are FirstName, LastName, and City, and then click the OK button to close the dialog box. When you have made these changes, your design surface should look like Figure 35-22.
Figure 35-22. The configured DataGrid control You should also see a small database icon at the lower-left corner of the design surface. This is a DomainDataSource object, which we will use to filter data based on the ComboxBox selection in the following sections. If you compile and run the project, you ll see that the data is loaded from the database and displayed in the DataGrid control. Once again, the data support that .NET provides for its user interface technologies has made this a relatively painless and quick process. Bear in mind that we have not had to configure or manage the network connections between the Silverlight client and the ASP.NET service, issue database queries, or convert data to and from C# objects. Everything works in a pleasant and seamless manner.
