So, if you want to change the margins for the entire document, you can click anywhere in the document and then edit the margin settings. To change the current margin settings, you can use the Margins command in the Page Layout group. You can choose from a list of preset options (see Figure 6-8), or you can customize your own. If you create a custom setting, the last custom setting will be included at the top of the list.

One change in Microsoft Word 2007 you may not have noticed is that the default settings for a document have changed. Previous versions of Word have default settings of 1.25" for the left and right margins. The new default settings include formats for 1" margins on all four sides of the document. If these new margin settings aren t what you need for most documents, you can modify the default settings. Default margin settings are saved in the template on which the document is based, so if the document was created using the Normal template, the changes will be made to the Normal template. To change the default margin settings: 1. Click the Margins button in the Page Setup group. 2. Select Custom Margins at the bottom of the menu. The Page Setup dialog box will display. 3. Select the desired settings. 4. Click the Default button in the lower-left corner of the dialog box. 5. Click Yes to confirm the change. When you change the default settings to custom margins, the new default settings will not display in the Margins menu.

Setting Margins for a Section in the Document
If your document has multiple sections, you may want to change the margins for only selected sections throughout the document. When you position the insertion point within the section, Word applies the changes to margin settings for only the current section.
CHAPTER 6 DESIGNING PAGE LAYOUTS 137
To change the margin settings for a section in a document: 1. Click anywhere within the section you want to change. 2. Click the Margins button in the Page Setup group. 3. Choose one of the margin setting options in the menu. 4. If you do not see the margin settings you need, click Custom Margins at the bottom of the menu. The Page Setup dialog box will display, and you can enter your desired settings.
Setting Margins for a Portion of the Document
If your document does not have section formats, you can still change the margin settings for a portion of the document. To change the margin settings for only a portion of a document: 1. Select the text you want to format. 2. Click the Margins button in the Page Setup group. 3. Click Custom Margins at the bottom of the menu. The Margins tab in the Page Setup dialog box will display. 4. Under Margins, enter your desired settings. 5. Under Preview, in the Apply to box, click the down arrow and choose Selected text. 6. Click OK. Section breaks will automatically be inserted above and below the selected text. If the selected portion of the document displays on a separate page, you can edit the section breaks as described in the section Editing a Section Break later in this chapter.
