When you want to position the text on the page relative to the top and bottom margins, you need to align the text vertically. You can align the text at the top of the page, in the center of the page, or at the bottom of the page. You can also vertically justify the text, which means the paragraphs are spread out evenly between the top and bottom margins. You can align an entire section of text, or you can select a portion of the text and align only the selection. To align text vertically: 1. Click the Dialog Box Launcher on the Page Setup group to display the Page Setup dialog box. 2. Display the Layout tab. 3. In the Vertical alignment box, select the desired option. 4. In the Apply to box, select the desired option. 5. Click OK.

Using Watermarks
A watermark is text or a graphic that displays behind document text. Watermarks can be used to draw attention to a document, or they can be used to identify the status or source of a document. For example, you can add a watermark to a document to label the document as Confidential or For Office Use Only. Usually, the graphic or text is lightened or washed out so the document text is still easy to read. Formatting watermarks in Word 2007 is much easier with the new Watermark command in the Page Background group (see Figure 6-13).
Figure 6-13 The new Watermark button makes it much easier to add watermarks to document pages.
Adding a Predesigned Watermark
When you create a watermark, the contents and formatting are stored in the header pane of the document. By adding the watermark to the header, the watermark will be repeated on all pages in the document. The watermark will display behind the text in the document, and it will not display in the header.
NOTE Watermarks are visible only when the document is displayed in Print Layout view.
To add a predesigned watermark: 1. If necessary, switch to Print Layout view. 2. Double-click at the top of the document to open the header pane. Make sure the insertion point is positioned in the header pane. 3. Click the Watermark button in the Page Background group and select a watermark design.
NOTE When you insert a cover page in a document, it is created in a separate section of the document and it has its own separate header. Therefore, if you create a watermark for the other pages in the document, the watermark will only apply to the current section and will not appear on the cover page.

Creating a Custom Watermark
If you want to choose the text and/or graphics for your watermark, you will need to create a custom watermark. Word 2007 makes it very easy. To create a custom watermark: 1. If necessary, switch to Print Layout view. 2. Double-click at the top of the document to open the header pane. Make sure the insertion point is positioned in the header pane. 3. Click the Watermark button in the Page Background group. 4. Select Custom Watermark at the bottom of the menu. The Printed Watermark dialog box will display. 5. Choose either Picture watermark or Text watermark. 6. Do one of the following: a. If you chose to create a picture watermark, click Select Picture and locate the picture. b. If you chose to create a text watermark, enter the text, and if desired, change the font, font size, and font color. You can also change the layout of the text. 7. Click OK.
NOTE To edit a watermark object, you must first select it. To select the watermark, display the header pane and position the insertion point in the header pane. Then, you should be able to select the watermark object.
