When you insert a caption, you can choose the label Figure, Equation, or Table followed by an autonumber. However, you can also create your own labels. When you click the AutoCaption button, you can change the settings so that Word will automatically create captions when you insert objects in your document. For example, you can set options to automatically create captions with labels and numbers for each Word table you insert in a document. When you insert a caption, a SEQ field is created. A field code for a caption looks similar to one shown here: { SEQ Table \* ARABIC }

Creating a Table of Figures
If your document includes several tables, figures, or equations, you can create a table of figures to show their locations in the document. A table of figures serves the same purpose as a TOC, helping the reader find information. Creating a table of figures is similar to creating a TOC. Instead of using marked text, you specify whether you want to use captions for tables, figures, or equations. Word then identifies the captions in the document and compiles the list of figures. If you rearrange the sequence, or if you add or delete tables or figures, or if you edit the captions, you can easily update the table of figures. To create a table of figures using caption styles: 1. Position the insertion point where you want the table of figures to appear. 2. Click the Insert Table of Figures button in the Captions group on the References tab. 3. Under General, click the down arrow in the Formats box, and choose a table of figures style (see Figure 7-14). 4. Click the down arrow in the Caption label box, select a caption type, and then click OK.
CHAPTER 7 USING REFERENCE FEATURES 173
Figure 7-14 Word creates a table of figures by identifying all the captions in
a document.
When you create a table of figures, Word inserts a TOC field, but instead of referencing heading levels or TC entries, the TOC code includes references to the captions used to create the table. Following is an example of a TOC field code for a table of figures: { TOC \h \z \c "Figure" } If you edit the document after the table of figures is inserted, click the Update Table button in the Captions group to make sure all references and page numbers are correct.
Formatting Cross-References
Another way to help a reader navigate in a document is to provide cross-references. For example, you can create a reference on page 1 that tells the reader For more information, see Figure 2 on page 3. Cross-references can link to headings, footnotes, bookmarks, captions, and numbered paragraphs.
