This activity is similar in form to a Parallel activity in that by itself it does nothing it is merely a container for other activities. In this case, it controls the execution of its child activities, causing them to be performed in a series. As serial execution is the default for workflow execution, this activity is only useful as a container object. It allows you to place several activities in situations (such as inside a Replicator activity) where only one activity is allowed. These activities are only useful for state machine workflows. They allow you to control the state of your workflow. More on state machines in the next chapter. The Suspend activity pauses the execution of your workflow and optionally passes an error message back to the host (SharePoint). Workflow execution can be resumed from the host.

This activity causes the immediate cessation of all workflow activity your workflow just stops running. Similar to the Suspend activity, an error message can be provided back to the host application. Unlike the Suspend activity, this activity makes it impossible to restart a workflow. This activity allows you to explicitly invoke an exception, which should then be handled via a Fault Handler activity. This is functionally equivalent to the C# throw statement.

Thoughts on Usage
Throw
Useful in a scenario where your workflow accepts external input and expects that input to be within a certain range. If the received input is outside that range, you can throw an exception and let the Fault Handler catch and handle the error.
While
Another flow-control activity. This activity allows your workflow to loop through, and continue looping through a series of activities so long as a certain condition is met.
Caution Officially, only four of the standard WF activities are supported:
Code ConditionedActivityGroup Sequence Replicator I ll admit to being puzzled by this. The IfElse activity isn t supported Not to mention While, Delay, Parallel, and Terminate If the FaultHandler activity isn t supported, why is there a Fault Handler view on our workflow As near as I can figure, the official documentation is lagging behind the product itself. Various Microsoft people I ve spoken with confirm that this list of supported activities is from very early in the product development process and needs to be updated. So I ve left the full list intact in Table 5-1. At one point or another, I ve worked with each of the activities and haven t run into any problems. Perhaps there is some esoteric issue that will raise its ugly head in certain scenarios and I m just not testing those scenarios. Keep that in mind as you go, but I think you ll be all right.

SharePoint Activities
With 20 of 31 out-of-the-box activities available to us, you might wonder what s left. What else do we need The answer is that we need SharePoint-specific functionality (and, believe it or not, we need the ability to send an email a conspicuous hole in the default activities list). SharePoint ships with a number of activities out-of-the-box to provide SharePoint-specific tasks. We can make use of these activities in our custom workflows. Table 5-2 provides details on the additional 22 SharePoint activities each with a brief description (although most are pretty self-explanatory). Table 5-2 brings our total count of available activities up to 42 not too bad for an initial release (and perhaps a little significant if you re a Douglas Adams fan). Once the vibrant third-party component community kicks in, this number will explode.
Note If you can t see these activities, you need to add them to the Toolbox. I recommend creating a new
tab called something clever like SharePoint to place them all in. Right-click on the new tab, select Choose Items, select the Activities tab, and add a reference to the Microsoft.Sharepoint.WorkflowActions assembly from the \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\ 12\ISAPI folder. Now you ll have a whole slew of new activities to play with.
