Smolin: Well, in a way, it s flattering. If you re good, you attract, you know, the imitators. Do you have a manual Carlton: Yeah, the user guide is on the CD, or now if they order a download, they get a link to a PDF. Probably anywhere, depending on the version, from 45 to 75 pages. Smolin: How long did it take you to write that Carlton: Not that long. Smolin: As long as to write the program Or longer Carlton: No, no much shorter, because again it just goes through each data entry screen, kind of just guides what goes in there. Again, if you re in the jewelry business, you re going to understand what you should put in there. Jewelry part, part name, size, price, vendor, date purchased. Smolin: Right, it s all pretty generic stuff. Carlton: And what I try to teach them again are things specific to using a database, know how to sort, how to filter, how to back up your database. The things that people have problems with are usually more computer functionality, because again, a lot of my customers are maybe middle-aged women that aren t really computer-savvy, so this is a computer program, and they re really kind of new to computers. So I had to just make it really bulletproof. Smolin: And you wrote that manual before you sold the first one Carlton: Right. It came with the first one. And then I kind of added some things to it, and then again with the different versions I had to make changes. Smolin: Do you have online help in the program Tooltips Carlton: Yeah. Smolin: How often do you release updates Carlton: I would say probably every few months. Updates are free, just little bug fixes. Smolin: How long does it take the typical user to learn to use the product once they open it up and install it Carlton: You know I think they can start getting data in there right away, start putting in their parts. Smolin: So really not much of a learning curve Carlton: There really isn t. I think it might take them a while to figure out, when they go through the reports, to see what they want, you know, what information they really need. But for most people, they want a catalog of their work and a price list. And mailing labels. Smolin: How long does it take them to implement the product and, more or less, fully using it, getting their data in and using the reports

Carlton: You know it really depends on how long they ve been in the business Smolin: I know it could take forever but Carlton: There s people that have, you know, 3,000 beads that they ve collected over the years, and I tell them, you know, because, you re not even using all of them. Just enter the ones that you buy now or put in, you know, what you re using now or what is in the pieces that you re currently selling. They need to have something right away. I d rather them get a price list and a catalog right away. Then later on you can go back in and put in the parts that weren t there. Smolin: So if somebody s motivated and they have their lights on . . . Carlton: They could have a catalog in an afternoon. Smolin: In an afternoon, so it could be theoretically, a one-day or two-day implementation. Carlton: Sure. Smolin: Well that s pretty good. What kind of learning and implementation problems did you encounter with people, and what did you do about them Carlton: You know I really don t have that problem. Smolin: Well, that s great. Do you do custom modifications Carlton: Not really, I would rather just do something that s going to benefit all my users across the board instead of just one. Smolin: So anything somebody wants becomes a generic upgrade Carlton: If I think it s going to be something everybody needs. I mean I ve had people say, Can you make the dollar like four decimal places And I ll say, No, because in real life, nobody s going to look at four decimal places. It doesn t make sense. If it s in a calculation somewhere, yes, I mean you might see that but . . . on a price list Nobody wants to see that. Smolin: Did the Jewelry Designer Manager lead to any other products Carlton: Well, one other. I had people say, I could use this for my crafts. I do corks, or I do candles, or all kinds of other crafts. So I thought, Oh, maybe I should have another program. So what I did is I created Craft Manager. I took one of my versions, and I took the word jewelry out of all the data entry screens and all the reports. The code is all the same. It may say jewelry back there, but no one s going to see it. But the user interface just says craft, part, piece. Smolin: And this is called the Craft Manager Carlton: Yeah. So, it s really the same, the same exact program, except for the font, and I changed the cover Smolin: and some of the nomenclature. And how is it working
