It seems obvious to say, but before you release your product, you have to test it thoroughly. Of course, you ll be the primary tester the first line of defense, as it were. You are what you might call the alpha tester. Of course, you know all the right moves to make. So testing your own software can go just so far. You need some na ve users to do the rest. And this second rank of testers are called Beta testers. And where they test are the Beta test sites. Users are great. You never know what they re going to do next. I ve had users report odd errors to me. And when I asked them how they did it, they often described a sequence of keystrokes that s so illogical, so senseless, it makes you wonder how they found their way to work in the morning. However, the fact that MY software allowed them to do it and MY software generated an error when they did it is MY fault, and it s MINE to fix. The na ve user your Beta tester will find all of the invalid paths and sequences of operation that you never thought of, let alone thought possible. This, of course, is where the first use and value of your error trapping and reporting will come into play. Because at the Beta testing level you EXPECT bugs. And you want them faithfully documented and reported. But Beta test subjects have another even more valuable role to play. They will give you feedback on what your program is doing right but can be improved places where the Tab key tabs to a control that s out of sequence for the work they re doing, places where a keyboard shortcut would be handy so they wouldn t have to move their right hand from the keyboard to the mouse. It s time-consuming and often inconvenient, but there can be nothing more valuable than sitting with your beta tester and watching over their shoulder as they run your software. They don t always have the technical knowledge to know what the options and possibilities are in software design, to ask the right questions, or make good suggestions. But they know what they like. As a software designer, you think you know what the problem is, and you design and implement what you think is a real good solution. You take your best guess, and you always hit somewhere (hopefully) close to the target. Your Beta testers will tell you where you ve missed the mark. If you pay close attention to the first few Beta testers, they will refine your aim and score a bull seye for you. A note of caution with Beta testers. It is a rare Beta tester who will deliberately go through each function of your program just to see if it works. Most testers will set up the program for just the functionality they need, and that is all that gets tested. If you have five testers and they all test the same two functions of the program, they have been a big help, but the job is not done. It is still up to you to spend your time to exercise every input, every calculation, and every report in your Alpha testing process. Recruiting Beta testers can be a tricky business. In return for putting up with the inevitable bugs and lack of operational polish in your program, they ll

want to get something of value in return. It goes without saying, therefore, that when you give your program to the Beta testers, it should be as operationally smooth and polished and bug free as you can make it. Beta testers are easily frustrated. So if your software doesn t yield something of value for the time and effort they ll be giving you, you ll quickly lose them. On the upside, if they re satisfied, pleased with your software, and are receiving good value from using it, they will become your first references. Nobody wants to be first. And the prospects that evaluate your product will want to see testimonials and perhaps ask for references to someone who s actually using your product in a working environment. Having that reference will be invaluable as you launch your product.
