OK, that was a lot of stuff. There are a lot of different issues regarding the appearance of your product, any of which could make or break your product depending on how you implement them. Before you start programming, I suggest you scan through this chapter and make an action item list of all the design and implementation issues presented here and any more you think of yourself. Keep this list at your elbow to remind you of issues that otherwise might slip through the cracks. From time to time, do a more detailed review of your progress on each item. In this way, you ll stay on the glide path to a successful conclusion.

Jackie Murphy started Murphy s Creativity (www.murphyscreativity.com/) in 1993 to do mailing lists and envelopes. She developed and released her first product in 1999 and was joined by husband Doug in 2000 after he retired. They avoided one of the developer s worst nightmares by watching a colleague s mistakes. The value of their advice on testing cannot be overestimated. Smolin: You guys are in business here writing and selling software, doing some custom work, but you also have a couple of products. J. Murphy: Right. Smolin: Looking at your web site, I see two products there Wedding Management for Professionals and Show Producer. Let s talk about Wedding Management for Professionals first. What on earth possessed you to . . . no let me rephrase that . . . why did you create this product Where did you get the idea How did it start J. Murphy: One of the master wedding planners from the Association of Bridal Consultants came to me and said we need software, and I said OK, what do you need Smolin: And that was it J. Murphy: That was it. She actually started out just with a database. She said, I need to work more efficiently, and so we built the database. And then we kind of got it all done and she [said], Wow, you know, this should be software, and so . . . Smolin: So this woman was from . . . J. Murphy: The Association of Bridal Consultants. She was a master wedding planner. Smolin: Did she hire you initially to create an application for her J. Murphy: Yeah. Smolin: So you did the database and then a front end J. Murphy: Right. Smolin: And was it highly customized for her requirements J. Murphy: It was. In that all the information we had at that point to create the database came from her. But, as it turns out, because she was a master wedding planner and she d been at this for so many years, everything that she was doing was also the same knowledge she was passing on to the

younger wedding planners. And it was actually pretty much industry standard of how they managed information. So it was actually very beneficial because the design we came up with has pretty much worked across the board for everybody. Smolin: What year was that J. Murphy: That was 1999. Smolin: You did this in Microsoft Access J. Murphy: Access. Smolin: And did you consider any other platforms for this J. Murphy: No. Why would we You know Access is easy to develop in, right And that s what we had been working in. So, you know really . . . why change D. Murphy: I looked briefly at VB [Visual Basic]. But Access is so convenient to develop in. The reporting is so great. So we stuck with Access. Smolin: Right. Now you guys do have expertise in other platforms D. Murphy: .NET and SQL Server and that stuff. But .NET, you know, if you re going to start all over, that would probably be the way to go, because it s much friendlier to install than Access is now. J. Murphy: What we re finding with our friends that write software, a lot of them wrote it with VB. And now they re now having to rewrite it in .NET because their VB is not Vista compatible. Smolin: Do they lose something working in VB not having the automation with the other office modules D. Murphy: No, you know Office can be pretty much automated from almost anything. Smolin: So you finished this application, and she began to use it, and then what made you decide to, like, sell the second one J. Murphy: [Laughter] It was basically just Hey this is great let s sell it! But you can t just sell an Access database. I mean, you can, but then it s just a nightmare to keep it up, and then you ve got issues. And so we talked about it and decided, you know, let s just make it software. Smolin: Make a product J. Murphy: Make a product of it. D. Murphy: She turned it into an MDB MDE actually. Compiled. But, there s a lot of, well, you know, refinement you have to do to something that s custom to make it into something that s generic. So that was the big project there. Smolin: Did the wedding consultant you worked with . . . did she know any programming
