The ISO setting determines how sensitive the camera is to light Choose a low ISO setting when shooting in bright light and a high ISO setting when shooting in dim light ISO settings for digital cameras range from ISO 50 to ISO 3200, with a few offering ISO 6400 As mentioned previously, images captured with high ISO settings will have more digital noise Some images photographed at ISO 3200 and ISO 6400 may be unusable due to the high degree of digital noise Consult your camera manual for the available ISO range

Zoom In on Your Subject
Every digital camera features a zoom lens of some sort Point-and-shoot digital cameras generally feature an optical zoom with a maximum magnification of 3X or 5X, while high-end digital cameras may have a zoom with a magnification as high as 12X Your camera may also have digital zoom Images captured with digital zoom are coarser than images captured with optical zoom When you use digital zoom, the camera crops to an area of the maximum optical zoom and then enlarges it to the specified image size
1 Select the desired ISO setting from your camera
menu
2 Select the noise filter option from your camera
menu
3 Compose and shoot the picture
If your camera doesn t have a digital noise filter, mount your camera on a tripod, and shoot several pictures in low light without a flash The ideal test of a camera s ability to deal with digital noise is a night scene with bright lights and a dark sky Shoot the first picture at the lowest ISO setting, the second picture at the next highest ISO setting, and so on Download the pictures to your computer, and preview them at 200 percent magnification to see the ISO setting at which digital noise becomes visible

Cope with Lighting Conditions
When objects are viewed in different lighting conditions, the three primary colors (red, green, and blue) exist in varying proportions, depending on the color temperature of the light source As the color temperature changes, the color cast changes When a color temperature is high, there is more blue When the color temperature is low, there is more red The human eye compensates for color temperature When you view a white object under a fluorescent light, it appears white However, the same object has a greenish cast when recorded by a camera image sensor Your camera probably has AWB (automatic white balance), which compensates for color temperature under most conditions However, if you notice that your images have a color cast, as shown in Figure 2-11 (left), you ll have to manually set the white balance using your camera menu settings Figure 2-11 (right) shows the same subject with the white balance adjusted properly
