the project team with new skills, new experience, new ideas, and a newfound energy Hopefully, you experience the latter on all your projects Here are the true benefits of solid team development:
Less turnover Happy campers (happy project team members) Team spirit (good communications, collaboration, and camaraderie) Efficient results
Ways to Develop Your Team
Teamwork is a critical success factor on projects It all starts with good communications (more on this topic in 10) It is up to the PM to communicate effectively to minimize confusion and maximize results The PM is responsible for building a sense of teamwork (team spirit) and for motivating the team members so they want to work together for the greater good of the project Here are some things you can do that will help build and develop your team members:
Get to know your team members (including their strengths and weaknesses) and be there for them if they have questions or need support or assistance Use a kickoff meeting to set the tone, communicate expectations, and get everyone on the same page Schedule and manage regular team meetings to keep the team informed (not just meetings for the sake of meetings; they must be meaningful and informative) Set up and communicate your recognition, award, or reward program (where the incentives may include on-time delivery of activities under the person s control Allow time for one-on-one discussions and for team brainstorming for new ideas Set the tone for open discussions and listen to your team (verbal and nonverbal cues) Consider a team charter (to set the ground rules or rules of engagement for team members) This can include how team meetings will be conducted, voting (if appropriate), and escalations (if there are disagreements or disputes) Provide timely team and individual evaluations and feedback so there are no surprises Praise good performance through your established awards and recognition program Be willing to change if things are not working as planned For example, don t hold on to an employee just because he has been there forever and is a good guy Such a decision can t be personal; it has to be based on project performance
