A trigger defines an operation that is performed when a specific event occurs on a table A trigger can be defined for when a user inserts a new record, updates an existing record, or deletes a record The trigger is configured to execute a specific function when the event occurs The function executed as a result of a trigger is called a trigger function This section describes what trigger functions are and demonstrates how to use them

A trigger function looks similar to the stored procedure function Trigger functions use the same CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION command as a stored procedure to define the procedural language code executed by the trigger There are, however, two things that are different between the two: Trigger functions do not use input arguments in the function, but rather are passed arguments from a trigger event Trigger functions have access to special variables from the database engine Since trigger functions are not executed by SQL commands, you are not able to send input arguments to the function through the function definition Instead, arguments are passed from the trigger to the trigger function using special variables Similarly, since the trigger function does not send output to the calling program, there are no output data type arguments to define The trigger returns either a NULL value or a record having the same columns as the table the trigger was defined for When a trigger function is called, the database engine passes a group of special variables to the trigger function to define the environment the trigger function is working in The special variables can be used within the trigger function to determine environment features, such as how the function was called, what data is present when the trigger was fired, and when the trigger was fired Table 9-2 lists and describes the trigger special variables available for use in a trigger function After the trigger function is created, you must define the actual trigger event that executes the function This is done using the CREATE TRIGGER command:

The trigger can be defined to occur either before or after the event occurs The event can be an INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE SQL command on the table the trigger is defined for There are two methods for firing triggers You can select to fire the trigger once for each row that is affected by the event (such as multiple rows in an UPDATE or DELETE command) by specifying the ROW parameter Alternatively, you can select to fire the trigger only once for each statement that triggers the event, no matter how many rows are returned (even if no rows are returned) by specifying the STATEMENT parameter Finally, the function to execute when the trigger is fired is declared This defines the trigger function created using the CREATE FUNCTION SQL command The arguments listed in the function parameter are not passed to the function within the normal function definition (remember, trigger functions do not define input arguments) Instead, the arguments in the CREATE TRIGGER command are passed using the TG_ARGV special variable
