window (that is, filtering the source data) means you can t remove the filter later in a pivot table Filtering data at the import stage reduces the size of the PowerPivot model You can also add, change, or remove filters and sorts you impose during the Table Import Wizard by using the Table Properties button in the Properties group of the PowerPivot Design ribbon so it s not a disaster if you get it wrong in the first place As just mentioned, you can opt to write your own queries instead of choosing tables and/or views The query can be your own Select statement, or you can call a stored procedure that contains a Select statement and returns data The choice is shown in the Choose How to Import the Data stage of the Table Import Wizard This dialog is shown in Figure 3-9 If you turn on the option button for Write a Query That Will Specify the Data to Import, and click Next, you will be in the Specify a SQL Query dialog, which is shown in Figure 3-10 In this dialog you can give your query a name (this will be the name of your PowerPivot table) and type in your SQL Select statement As this is SQL Server, the SQL will be T-SQL (Transact-SQL), which is the SQL dialect supported by SQL Server Note, however, the Design button This is easily missed, but it s very, very useful, especially if your SQL is a little rusty! Clicking this button opens a query designer in graphical mode This graphical query designer for

SQL is shown in Figure 3-11 The Edit as Text button, at the top left, toggles between graphical mode and text mode If you make changes in text mode, you will lose any previous changes you made in graphical mode The Import button allows you to use prewritten SQL script files The Run Query button displays the results of your query in the Query Results pane at the bottom of the designer, so you can check whether your query is working as you want This Query Results pane can be collapsed and expanded, as can the Selected Fields, Relationships, and Applied Filters panes at the right of the designer The Database View pane to the left enables you to add tables or views or stored procedures to the query In addition, you can choose particular columns from your tables or views And, as a really nice touch, you can choose the columns you want from a stored procedure that returns data The columns you choose are shown in the Selected Fields pane In the same pane, the Aggregate column has a drop-down that you can use to create Group By columns and aggregate functions on other columns, such as Sum or Count

Figure 3-10 Specify a SQL Query dialog
If you add two or more tables, the designer should pick up any relationships in your source data and display them in the Relationships pane Should there be no relationships, you might try clicking Auto Detect to automatically add relationships Alternatively, you can click the Add Relationship button (the third from the left) and choose your own fields for the join If you do so, the Edit Fields button lets you change the columns used in the relationship You can also add relationships between tables in PowerPivot later, but creating them at this point makes a fast PowerPivot even faster, as you are effectively denormalizing data before importing The Applied Filters pane has an Add Filter button (the first one on the left) This adds a Where clause to your query Some of the options for the Where clause include Is (=) and Like This feature and all of the other features in the query designer help you write your SQL However, it s even more of a help if you already understand SQL, so you have some idea what it s doing for you! When you click OK to exit the designer, you can see the SQL generated in the Specify a SQL Query dialog If you want to know a little more about writing SQL queries, please refer to Appendix A or to my book Practical SQL Queries for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (McGraw-Hill/Professional, 2010)
