This will give you important clues about how you might proceed with motor control. As you play with the constants and variables in this program, you will notice that essentially the gain on the motor needs better control (we lose control at high and low gains and when making short moves). In the next steps, we will improve on the operation of the motor as affected by the error in the move position (and thereby the gain on the amplifier). The encoder I used has 42 full quadrature cycles per revolution, and the program reads every encoder change on each of the two channels, to give 168 counts per revolution. The average move we make needs to consist of about 25 revolutions of the motor. (Approximately 4,000 counts in round numbers, in each direction, as we play with the system.) This move will be long enough to allow us to develop the control we need, yet short enough not to waste time. There will be time enough for the motor to speed up, run at a constant speed, and then slow down and stop at the desired point. Each time it stops, the encoder must be in the same position if things are right because we moved forward and backward the same amount. We can use a CASE statement to set the motor gain depending on the error signal. Here we are turning over the calculation of the motor gain to a computerized function that we can base on whatever we want. We can now respond to the error signal in any way we want as long as we can describe our needs with a CASE statement. Of course, we do not have to use a CASE statement, but in Spin this is the easiest way to achieve our goal at our current level of expertise. We implement these ideas in Program 28-8. There is no potentiometer input in this program, although that could be added. Here, we control the system with the gain equations to see what happens. You have to change the program and then download it for each iteration to see what the effect of the changes you made to the gain equation is.
