Sometimes, as project managers, we get to choose who will work on the project team or we may get to pick some of the people. We will be picking from a limited pool perhaps just people at our company who are available, or perhaps candidates we can interview. In either case, we will need to look at both the person s technical skills for the job and also at their ability to work well on a goal-oriented project team.

Since we are unlikely to nd the perfect blend of skills and personality, we will need to evaluate each person in both areas, and then decide who is best for the job. In some projects and roles, such as those that require speci c engineering, programming, or other professional skills, the technical quali cations are most important. In other projects or roles, the teamwork skills are most important, and a willing person can pick up the knowledge to do the job.

Technical skills can be derived from the WBS. If we or experts in the appropriate elds look at the WBS, we will be able to say what professional skills, and what level of skill, are required for each job. If you are managing a technical project in an area outside your expertise, be careful. It can be more complicated than you might think. For example, setting up a web page can require any of these skills: computer graphics design; ability to use a web tool such as Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia DreamWeaver ; ability to write HTML code; ability to write scripts in a programming language such as JavaScript or PHP; and the ability to put all of this together, send it to a web site, and make it work. One person is unlikely to have all of these skills. Exactly which ones does your project need To nd out, get expert help de ning the tasks in the WBS. Then write a job description, and look for people with many of the skills you need. When you do, you will also need to be concerned with the level of skill. Is the person trained in school Certi ed How many months or years of experience does the applicant have using skills relevant to this job Can you take a look at samples of work done In looking at a person s skill level, we will need to assess: appropriateness of skill to the project; ability to deliver quality work; and speed or productivity in a limited time. Which of these is most important for your current project

A project is a team e ort on a tight deadline. This de nes the key skills required for people on projects and teams. Key skills for people on projects include: Ability to get work done and delivered on time. A start-driven focus. We want people who will start a job as soon as they can, not ones who will wait until a deadline is pressing. Self-responsibility.

Ability to understand what is to be done the rst time. (Remember, a project is only done once!) Flexibility to handle changing circumstances. Some people work better at stable, routine jobs. Others are more stimulated by a job where they need to change plans as circumstances constantly change around them.

We also need to assess the key skills for people on teams: The ability to listen. The ability to express themselves clearly. Patience. Flexibility. A sense of humor.
If you meet people with all these skills, grab them! Realistically, everyone will have strengths and weaknesses. As you build the team, identify those and balance them. For example, if you are lling one position on a team that already has technical excellence, nd a good communicator who is willing to learn, and he or she might just pull everyone together. If resources allow time for training, you might give the more technical people training in teamwork or communications, and the more people-oriented team members technical training. Team members and project managers become more productive by strengthening our weaknesses than we do by focusing on our strengths and avoiding our weaknesses.
