In Project Management Demysti ed we want to make it easy for you to learn and to nd what you need to know. So we have created several di erent types of sidebars that will introduce key ideas. Here they are: Terms. Project management is full of jargon. The Terms sidebars give the meaning of a word the rst time it is used. The same term can be found in the glossary at the end of the book. Key Point. These sidebars tell you the most important thing you need to know from a chapter or a section. Quick Tips. These give you the most basic way to complete a task. They are especially useful to the novice project manager and to the project manager who needs a quick reminder of the most e cient solution. What This Means for You. Project Management Demysti ed is full of stories of what can go wrong or right. After many of the stories, in a What this means for you tip, we show you how to avoid the failure or succeed in the same way on your next project. Something Extra. Each of these sidebars gives the more experienced project manager a next step, a little tip that will make success that much easier. Caution. Once in a while, there are times not to use a certain tool or technique. These occasional cautions will keep you out of hot water.

My rst thanks go to Scott Ho heiser, my administrative assistant, who read and improved the whole manuscript and prepared the glossary. Malcolm Ryder read a previous version of the manuscript, and his insights are an invaluable part of this book. Many others provided all kinds of support, both professional and personal. On the professional side, Lee Krevat, of Sempra Energy, provided me the opportunity to teach this material to hundreds of project managers, and many other clients have used these materials, succeeded, and suggested improvements. On the personal side, I hope that I give my wife as much support in writing her book as she gave me on mine. Also, my brother, Steven M. Kemp, Ph.D., and my father, Bernie Kemp, were very supportive through the writing process.

Hello, Project Management
The four chapters in Part One introduce the big picture project management and give you everything you need to succeed on simple projects. In 1: What is Project Management we de ne projects, management, and project management, and discuss why it is valuable to think of project management as an independent discipline like accounting or marketing, and why it pays to learn to manage projects well. In 2, you will learn Tools to Use Over and Over, fundamental concepts about the process of a project and ways to make projects succeed. Success is also the focus of 3: Six Keys to Project Success, where we look at why most projects fail, run late, or blow their budgets, and what you can do to ensure that your project makes the top of the class by delivering real value on time and under budget. Lastly, in 4: The Project and Product Life Cycles, we introduce the system development life cycle. We explain the value of breaking up a project into a series of major phases, or stages, and map out the stages a project goes
