In the analysis stage, our focus should be on the customer and the other stakeholders. We found the most important stakeholders in the concept stage. Now it is time to nd all of them, listen to all of them, and create a speci cation that is the best it can be for every stakeholder. To listen well, we guide people by asking the right questions. The ideas, templates, and tools in this chapter will help you prepare the right questions and document them in a way that makes the next step, the design stage, easy. High-quality work in the analysis stage is extremely important. The earlier errors creep into a project, the more likely the project is to be delayed, exceed cost projections, or fail altogether. Table 6-1 shows common errors in the analysis stage and their consequences. The rest of the chapter shows how not to make those mistakes. The primary job of the concept, analysis, and design stages is planning, and the results are usually written documents. So how do we tell them apart The concept stage is a quick process, improving and validating (or rejecting) the idea of the project. It uses only a small percentage of the total time and money spent on the project. The analysis and design stages are much longer.

From the detailed project plan, we complete the budget, the schedule, and the risk, quality, and procurement plans. An excellent way to succeed on technical projects is to perform the analysis stage from the top down, and the design stage from the bottom up. The concept stage gives us an overall picture of the project. During analysis, we start with this big picture and we drill down, creating detailed set of requirements. In the design stage, we turn this around, and go from the bottom up. We de ne each feature of each component or module. Then we build a plan to create each module. Putting it all together, we build upwards from the details to a complete, accurate budget, schedule, and project plan. Strategically, top-down concept and analysis stages of work ensure that we are solving the right problem and creating the product or service with the highest value possible. Bottom-up design work ensures that what we are making will work. The engineers who know the details start with the details
