There are basically two types of categories:
Income is incoming money. It includes receipts such as your salary, commissions, interest income, dividend income, child support, gifts received, and tips.
3 / Setting Up Accounts, Categories, and Tags
Expense is outgoing money. It includes insurance, groceries, rent, interest expense, bank fees, finance charges, charitable donations, and clothing.
What Does This Mean to You Categories
Categories Subcategories Sound confusing Like a lot of work Take it from me: it isn t. And it s worth the time you spend doing it. Here s how it works. When you enter a transaction in Quicken, you ll categorize it using one of your predefined categories. (Sometimes Quicken can even guess the right category the first time you enter a transaction for a payee!) The next time you enter a transaction for the same payee, Quicken automatically assumes the transaction will use the same category, so Quicken enters it for you. I m willing to bet that nine times out of ten, Quicken s assumption is right. So it really isn t that much work. Worth the trouble You bet! By properly categorizing transactions, you can get a true picture of where your money comes from and where it goes. You can create realistic budgets based on accurate spending patterns to help you save money. You can create tax reports that ll save you or your tax preparer time. You can even automate much of your tax preparation by exporting all those properly categorized transactions right into Intuit s TurboTax tax preparation software. So don t leave category fields blank when you enter transactions. Take that extra step. It s worth it. Besides, there s always the Misc category if you can t think of a more appropriate one.
Subcategories
A subcategory is a subset or part of a category. It must be the same type of category as its primary category. For example, you may use the Auto category to track expenses to operate your car. Within that category, however, you may want subcategories to record specific expenses, such as auto insurance, fuel, and repairs. Subcategories make it easy to keep income and expenses organized into manageable categories, while providing the transaction detail you might want or need.
