A tag is an optional identifier for specifying what a transaction applies to. For example, if you have two vehicles for which you track expenses, you can create a tag for each vehicle, such as Jeep and Chevy Truck. Then, when you record a transaction for one of the vehicles, you can include the appropriate tag with the category for the transaction. Because Quicken can produce reports based on
What Does This Mean to You Tags
If you were doubtful about the benefit of using categories in transactions, tags will certainly be a hard sell. Fortunately, I don t have to sell it to you because you really don t have to use this feature at all. That said, let me explain how I use tags. I write books for a living. I ve written tons of them. And I use Quicken to track my income and expenses for each book. Sure, I could use the category feature to set up a separate category for every book I ve ever written or revised there are currently 68 of them! but why bother when the tag feature is available I simply set up a separate tag for each book I ve written. Then, when I record an income or expense transaction related to a specific title, I can use the same income and expense categories I always use for writing-related income and expenses. I just add, almost as an afterthought, the tag that corresponds to the book. What s the benefit of doing this Well, suppose I want to determine which of my titles earns the most money. I can create a Profit and Loss Report within Quicken, with separate columns for each tag in this case, book title. Then, when it s time to revise a title, I know in advance whether it s going to be worth my while. Maybe this example doesn t apply to you. But here s one that might. Got kids Try this. Create a separate tag for each child. Then, when you ve got expenses for a specific family member, record the transaction with the appropriate tag name. (If you ve got income related to a specific child, I m impressed; be sure to include the tag name with those transactions, too.) Then, when that partially grown bundle of joy asks for $357.49 to buy a new cell phone, you can show him a report of how much he s cost you so far when you say no.
