Managing Your View Objects
In 4 the Create Business Components from Tables wizard created default view objects for each of the entity objects, with each of these view objects selecting all the attributes from the corresponding entity object. This provides a good starting point, but in reality you will want to start shaping these view objects to your application needs.
Creating View Objects
First off, it s worth looking at how to create view objects. Just like entity objects, there are a number of different ways to create a view object. Regardless of the method you choose, you will still end up with the same view object. In 5 you created a Departments entity object. If you want to expose this through a view object, you could select File | New and, from the New Gallery dialog, select ADF Business Components and then View Object. This launches the Create View Object wizard that takes you through the steps of selecting the underlying entity object(s) and attributes to create a view object.

Alternatively, you can right-click the Departments entity object in the Application Navigator and select New Default View Object. This opens the Create Default View Object dialog, into which you can enter for Package views and for Name DepartmentsView. This will create a view object based on all of the attributes of the Departments entity object. Double-click the newly created DepartmentsView view object in the Application Navigator to open the view object editor. Select the Entity Objects tab to confirm that this view object is based on the Departments entity object. You can also select the Attributes tab to confirm that each of the entity object attributes is mapped in this view object.
read-Only View Objects
With a view object based on an entity object, the entity object is providing a cache into which data is stored for update. However, what happens if you have static data that never changes, like a list of countries or list of valid values for a field Do you need the overhead of an entity object ADF Business Components allows you to define a view object based only on a select statement with no underlying entity object. Even so, the current thinking is that for database data that never changes, there is actually very little to be gained from, and in fact some drawbacks to, using a view object with no underlying entity object. If you do require a view object that represents read-only data, create the entity object and the view object, and set the view object to be read-only. So, for this application you might decide that the list of departments is never going to change and so is read-only in the application. In this case, you need to ensure that the DepartmentsView view object does not try to update the Departments entity object. Open the view object editor for DepartmentsView, select the Entity Objects tab, and select the Departments entity object. Now deselect Updatable to prevent the DepartmentsView view object from updating the entity object. This indicates that for this view object, the underlying entity object is not updatable.
