t is often said that a picture paints a thousand words, and this is especially true if you are trying to understand and view trends in huge collections of data. For this reason, you may find that presenting information using graphs or other visual means is a requirement for your application.
This chapter introduces the data visualization tools (DVT) and components that allow you to visualize your application data using graphs, charts, maps, and gauges. ADF Faces includes graphs, gauges, and map components for visually representing and interacting with application data. As with other ADF Faces components, a data collection can be dragged from the Data Controls panel onto a page, whereupon JDeveloper will present a menu of UI component options, including DVT components, which can be bound to the data.
TIp The secret to using these DVT components lies in the view object. If you ensure the correct aggregation of information in the view object, then it is relatively straightforward to bind the DVT components to that view of data. On selecting a DVT component, such as a graph or gauge, JDeveloper displays a dialog allowing you to define how that data collection should be bound to the component. Different components will require different information, given the differences in how they will display that data collection. On completing the required information, as you would for a table or a form, JDeveloper creates the appropriate binding, references that binding from the component, and displays the component on the page, where you can fine-tune the properties through the Property Inspector. Let s start by taking a look at some of the commonly used DVT components.
