NAS is hard-disk storage that is connected to application servers via the network. NAS is set up with its own network address. Since it is not attached to the department computer that is serving applications to a network s workstation users, application programming and files can be served faster because they are not competing for the same resources. The NAS device is attached to a LAN (often an Ethernet network) and assigned an IP address, and file requests are mapped by the main server to the NAS file server. NAS can be included as part of a SAN. A SAN is a collection of networked storage devices that can automatically communicate with each other, a subnetwork that interconnects different kinds of data storage devices as part of the overall network of computing resources for an enterprise. A SAN can be clustered in close proximity to other computing resources, or it can be in a remote location. A SAN supports disk mirroring, backup and restore, archiving and retrieval of archived data, data migration from one storage device to another, and the sharing of data among different servers in a network. SANs may include NAS-enabled devices, but they are not the same thing. Unlike a SAN, with NAS, users can directly access stored data without server intervention. A SAN, however, will automate management of storage systems, whereas NAS devices do not have this capability. Fibre Channel SANs can be designed as both shared-media and switched-access networks. In shared-media SANs, all devices share the same gigabit loop. Switches will increase a SAN s aggregate throughput. One or more switches can be used to create the Fibre Channel switching fabric. Accessing the services available from the switching fabric is possible only if the NIC of each storage device can connect to the fabric as well as to the operating system and the applications. Some companies are beginning to combine switched access and shared media in designing their SANs. In a combination design, RAIDs are attached to Fibre Channel switches, JBODs are connected to Fibre Channel hubs, and a tape drive is linked to a Fibre Channel bridge. For small sites (one or two servers and one or two RAIDs or JBODs), there are three choices: (1) stick with an SCSIonly model, (2) migrate to a point-to-point Fibre Channel network (with one NIC connected to each storage device), or (3) implement a shared-access (hub-based) SAN using a loop topology. As for managing a SAN, you should look for SAN devices that can be managed via SNMP or through the Web via HTTP. Devices also should support telnet (for remote diagnostics or servicing). In 4 we will discuss the dos and don ts of configuring a SAN, take a look at migrating from a legacy to a SAN environment, and explore some of the emerging technologies.
