weight of importance. Data must arrive at its destination. SANs provide this safe arrival. The Fibre Channel is a protocol, or a set of rules. With Fibre Channels, the transportation medium may be copper or fiberoptic cabling. The protocols (signal rules) that use copper or fiberoptic cabling are broken down into Fibre Channel layers. Fibre Channels are used to logically identify the stack data must pass through to make communication complete. This layering perspective helps significantly when completing Fibre Channel protocols (FCPs), software troubleshooting, and/or SAN troubleshooting. Additionally, when comparing FCPs to father s car ride, you may note that the car drives within a single lane of traffic when moving to and from the destination. Likewise, the Fibre Channel maintains this same concept. Its transportation is a serial transmission in single-line fashion. One line transmits, and a second line receives. The packets are lined up and transported in a serial approach. Historically, Fibre Channel technology emerged from network attribute extractions that combined with channeled connection characteristics. A channel is a hardware-intensive high-speed data pipe that maintains a high degree of reliability. A channel, more accurately, SCSI III Fibre Channel, is designed to support speed and reliability of channeling protocols; SCSI and/or High-Performance Parallel Interfaces (HIPPIs) achieve this with network flexibility through the addition and removal of devices in an accelerated manner. Additionally, the Fibre Channel specification supports the local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) protocols of Internet Protocol (IP), Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). Primary devices used in SAN environments are initiating devices, target devices, switches, bridges, and hubs. They are classified as interconnecting SAN devices because they tie all the components together. The initiating device is a device that looks for and communicates with target devices. It is commonly referred to as the host bus adapter (HBA), and it resides in the server or client workstation. The significance of the HBA is that it actually is an active device that seeks out its targeted pair to communicate with so as to achieve a file transfer. The HBA has the ability to monitor its path to its targeted pair. If, for some reason, it loses contact with the target, the initiator will switch to an alternate
