Do you think SANs are really ready for prime time Do you believe that they are universally interoperable Is it your opinion that there are plenty of multivendor mature management tools out there After listening to two prominent users speak at Storage Networking World last week, the only plausible answer to these questions is no. On the other hand, are some SANs already in place and rapidly reducing their total cost of ownership Can savvy users at least take the first steps toward integrated storage networking environments by forcing their vendors to sit down together and map out integration strategies Is the future bright with potential SAN benefits This time, the two speakers would say, You bet. The two users in question are Gary Fox, senior vice president and director of Enterprise Data Storage at First Union Bank, and Michael Butler, vice president of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. Both have been in the SAN trenches, both have felt the pain of implementation, and now both are increasingly enjoying the fruits of their labors.

6 Bank s Enterprise Check Image Archive (ECIA), which was created to replace the bank s outdated microfilm data access system. Each day, the First Union SAN has to handle some 600 GB of incoming data consisting of 17 million images that average 35 KB in volume. It also has to deliver data to desktops in 5 seconds from disk and 80 seconds from tape. On top of this, the bank is required by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to back up each of its 5,000 servers. Building the infrastructure required to meet all these specs is no easy job. As Fox puts it, Network architecture is a hard thing to come by. Fox hears the vendor rhetoric about SAN compatibility, but the harsh realities of his job have driven him to keep his SAN environment as simple as possible. In his opinion, a homogeneous switch infrastructure is the safest way to go. He also says that the most notable weak points he has to deal with are host bus adapters (HBAs) and disk and tape drivers, saying that most of his SAN problems to date can be traced back to these areas. The further Fox got into SAN development, the more he realized that he would have to rely on internal resources and a focus on heterogeneous technology. Even though he considered using a storage service provider, he did not go that route because his SAN environment was too highly customized. My advice is to standardize, particularly on HBAs, he declares. And be prepared to spend a lot of money on the fiber architecture.

With 250 TB of institutional storage and 4000 Microsoft Windows NT and UNIX servers accessing that data in a 24/7 environment, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter is focused primarily on risk aversion and business continuity. According to Butler, these are the two primary reasons why the financial institution built five SANs in the metropolitan New York area. Other reasons include the need for reduced time to market and the desire to take advantage of best-ofbreed technologies. In order to satisfy his company s SAN requirements, Butler and his team came up with the concept of campus computing SANs based on
