As introduced in a previous section, the user interface is independent of the screens generated by the screen painter. However, both interfaces and screens can be associated by means of the object known as the GUI status. The GUI status object is a special element which groups together the following user interface components (when the related screen is of type Normal): Menu bar Standard toolbar Application toolbar Function keys (not visible) The other element of the user interface, independent of the GUI status and of the screen, is the GUI title. The three types of objects (including the screen) can be assigned to the same program from within the repository browser. But to really and operatively assign them, the ABAP statements SET PF STATUS and SET TITLEBAR must be used in the source code of the dialog program (of type M), which contains the transaction logic, the process before output (PBO) module. Object Hierarchy Between programs, screens, and interfaces, the following hierarchies are possible: A program might have multiple GUI status and GUI titles. Multiple screens can be assigned to the same GUI status. One screen can be assigned to multiple GUI status and GUI titles, but only one at a time. Normally, in a user interface, both the GUI status and GUI title go together. 230

Main Menu Painter Objects The Function Concept When working with user interfaces within the menu painter, functions are very important elements. Functions are codes which the system stores in the system field SY UCOMM for programs or type 1 (reports) or in field OK CODE for transactions, when the corresponding function key, push button, or menu option menu is executed. An interface function has the following elements: Element Description Function code Identifies the function to the system Function type Tells the system when or how to carry out a function (see function types) Function text Short text to describe the function, for example Save Icon name Name of the icon to be displayed on a push button associated with a function Icon text Text to be output on the push button in addition to the icon associated with a function Infotext Text to be displayed in the status bar Fastpath Letter combination that allows users to choose functions without using the mouse Depending on which part of the dialog program you want to execute the code associated to the function, you can define several types of functions as the following shows: Dialog Program Part (ABAP Event) AT EXIT COMMAND (PAI) Executes the CALL TRANSACTION tttt statement, where tttt is the function code Executes system functions used internally in SAP standard applications. You should not use type S when creating your own functions. P Triggers a function defined locally at the GUI. This function is not passed back to the ABAP program (no SY UCOMM or OK CODE). Instead, it is processed at the presentation server. This type of function can only currently be used for tabstrip controls (screen painter). The function code is assigned in the dialog program. The user interface communicates with the dialog program using the SY UCOMM/OK CODE field. Type E T S
