The dictionary includes many functions for working with tables. There are five basic operations you can perform on tables: display, create, delete, modify, copy. Please do not confuse displaying a table with displaying the table entries (table contents). In order to display a table, it must previously exist; otherwise the system will display an error message in the status bar. For the following example, the table TABNA is used. To display this table, from the main dictionary screen, enter the table name in the Object name input field with the radio button selected next to Tables. Then, click on the Display button at the bottom of the screen, or press the F7 function key, or, alternatively, select Dictionary object Display from the menu. The system will display the table description as shown in Fig. 8 6.

Figure 8 6: Displaying a table definition. In this screen, you can see table information such as Table type, shown next to the name of the object. In the example, it is a transparent table. Short text description. Name of the user who made the last change, and the date of the change. Master language. Table status. On the screen, you can see this table is saved and active. Development class. For information on development classes, refer to Chap. 6. Delivery class, which sets the maintenance group for the table. It controls how tables will behave during client copy procedures, upgrades, and so forth. Tab. Maint. Allowed flag, which indicates whether you can generate a screen for maintaining table entries. Then, on the lower part of the screen, you can see the table fields with all associated characteristics such as: Field name. Key indicator. When set, this field is the primary key, or part of it. Data element. Basic data type. Length. Check table. Short text, describing the field. Additional information about the table can be displayed by selecting the corresponding functions from the menu or directly from the application toolbar, such as keys, indexes, or technical settings. Creating a Table To create a new table, from the main dictionary screen, enter the name of the table in the input field and click on the Create button. Remember that customer tables must follow SAP standard naming conventions for customer objects. For instance, start the name with Z or Y, otherwise they may be overwritten by SAP upgrades. After clicking on the Create button, the system displays a screen similar to the one shown in Fig. 8 6 but with empty input fields. On this screen you must enter a short description, the delivery class, and the table fields, specifying the primary key. When specifying fields, it is also mandatory to enter data elements and domains which must previously exist. Refer to the section entitled "Defining fields," later in this chapter. 268

Working with Tables Optionally, you can set foreign key relationships with other tables, as well as the maintenance flag and the technical settings. Once you enter all the information, you must save your settings and finally activate it to become effective in the system runtime. When saving a table, the system requests the development class and a new task (correction) which allow it to be transported and for the version to be managed. When activating the table you have a defined table structure, but the table still contains no entries. Copying Tables If you want to create a new table with a similar definition, it is a good, time saving practice to copy an existing one and modify it, for example, by adding or deleting table fields, modifying the short descriptions, and so on. To copy a table, enter the name of an existing table in the input field provided in the initial dictionary screen and click on the Copy button in the application toolbar or, alternatively, select Dictionary object Copy. The system will display a dialog box for entering the name for the new table. Then proceed the same way as you would to modify a table. Deleting Tables To delete a table, just enter its name and click on the Delete icon in the application toolbar. Remember that you can only delete your own tables. You should only delete SAP tables when requested to do so by SAP consultants or instructed by a SAPnet note, which is a rare occurrence. Modifying Tables To modify a table, enter the name of the table and click on the Change button on the lower part of the screen. The system will display a dialog box requesting the change request number for registering the modification, as explained in Chap. 6.
