For a dictionary object to be effective at runtime, that is, for a dictionary object to be available for use within programs, transactions, and so on, it must be in active status. For objects to become active, R/3 includes the Activation function. When a table or aggregated object is activated, it is placed at the disposal of the system as a runtime object in a way that makes it available very quickly for the application programs to access the relevant information of new activated objects. As stated at the beginning of this chapter, the ABAP data dictionary and the ABAP programming language as well as the rest of the workbench tools are completely integrated. For example, the information for a table object is divided in the ABAP dictionary among domains, data elements, field definitions, and table definitions. The runtime object of the table collects this information for application programs to access in an optimal way. Application programs and screens receive their information from the ABAP dictionary (metadata). Any change to the metadata affect all the system components related to them: when an object is activated, all objects dependent on it are also reactivated. In other words, the activation of a dictionary object can trigger a chain reaction activation, as many as the number of dependent objects, directly or indirectly. When a dictionary object is modified, which means that the object previously existed, this operation should be done with extreme care. It is good to know how many objects will be reactivated because of the modification of the first one. For instance, if you modify a domain, when activating it, it will reactivate all data elements, table fields, tables, matchcodes, views, lock objects, or structures which directly or indirectly are based on that domain. At the same time, it will affect all programs in which the previously mentioned object is used. To know how many and which ones are the effected or dependent objects of the one being modified, you can use the ABAP repository information system or the Where used list function. If there is a structural modification, that is, you change the format or type, most probably the effected tables will need to be readjusted at the database level because of such a change, else, there would be inconsistencies between the ABAP dictionary definition and the corresponding structure at the database level. From the R/3 release of 3.0 onward, when activating a table or any other object which requires an explicit definition in the database, for example, matchcodes, automatically generate the object in the database.
