At the SAP level, there are always two definitions of a structured database object which can contain data, such as tables, matchcode IDs, and so forth: Definition at the ABAP dictionary level Definition at the underlying DBMS level Both definitions of the same objects should always be consistent to be able to work with them without producing errors. This is, of course, normally the case, since when activating one of these objects in R/3, the ABAP dictionary utilities automatically generate the object in the underlying database. At this point, no inconsistencies exist since there are no modifications from the initial structure defined in the ABAP dictionary. However, in an object lifetime, it is very possible that the object can be modified. Modifications can affect the structure and the order of the object, for example, the order of the fields of a table. In such cases, it might be necessary to readjust the object to the database level, that is, to adapt the new structure of the object in the database according to its definition in the ABAP dictionary. There are three modes to readjust a table in the database: Deleting and recreating the table in the database. Using this method, all data in the table is lost. There are several ways to adjust a table or a matchcode ID. There are also several navigation options for calling the database utility, which contains the needed functions for the adjustment. There also is the possibility of running the adjustment directly from the SE38 or the SA38 transactions by executing the report RDDMASGO (mass adjustment mode). In the following example, it is assumed that the table structure in the dictionary has been modified. Since a modification has been performed, there is a need to adjust the structure of the table in the database (old structure) with the new structure as defined in the ABAP dictionary. To do that, you have to call the database utility by following these steps: At the initial ABAP dictionary screen, enter the table name in the Object name input field, select the radio button Tables, and click on the Change button. If you modify the table structure, for example, by adding a new field, or if the table has been previously modified, then the status is set to Revised. At this point, if you choose to activate the object, the system automatically displays a dialog box requesting the conversion of the table at the database level, that is, adjusting its new definition. In the displayed dialog box, you can click on the Database utility push button, to go directly to the database utility functions. If you did not choose to activate because you were aware of the needed adjustment, you could go to the database utility by selecting Utilities Database utility from the initial screen for table maintenance. Figure 8 25 shows an example.
