Every time you modify a profile, the system creates a new version but keeps the old one in the database. The file at the operating system is overwritten when saving the changes and activating it. At the operating system level, the old file is assigned the .BAK extension. The system only allows activating the most recent version of a profile. If you want to activate an older version, you must first copy the old version into a newer one.

You can always look at the current active parameter of an instance by running the RSPARAM or RSPFPAR reports. These reports must be submitted in the specific instance, it does not show global parameters. You can search for any particular parameter string by clicking on the Search icon. The difference between these reports is that RSPFPAR can be used for displaying a range of parameters (whether substituted or not) and also that users can request a short parameter description on the report output. The resulting list presents two parts. The first part shows the parameters in the form before the substitute variables are replaced. The second part of the report displays the real values of the instance parameters.

Modifications to the profiles are sometimes, although not often, needed for tuning the system, for changing the placement or number of the SAP services, or when changing the physical system resources, such as adding additional memory. Sometimes these changes will be suggested by the SAP technical personnel in EarlyWatch sessions. If you use the same instance or start profiles for several instances, you could delete the files which were generated by the R3SETUP tool but which are not used by the system. You should be careful, however, when doing this since the script files for starting the SAP system, startsap_<hostname>_<number> and stopsap_<hostname>_<number>, make a call to these profile files; so you should change those scripts accordingly. Editing Profiles Enter the profile name or select it from the possible entries list. The version is automatic. The options box Edit profile includes two command buttons, Display and Change, with three associated radio button options: Administration data. For any of the profile types, the administration data includes information such as the name and location of the operating system file, the date and time of modification and generation, user name who changed it, and the reference server for parameter checking. Basic maintenance. This is very useful since it does not present parameters with technical names, so there is no need to memorize them. The available options depend on the type of profile but normally include the basic and most important profile parameters. The basic maintenance option presents the profile parameters in a very convenient modifiable form, with push buttons and so on.

Profile Maintenance Options Extended maintenance. This presents the operating system profile file in R/3 list form without the comments. Allows for maintaining profiles at the individual parameter level. From the extended maintenance screen, it is possible to create additional parameters which are not set in the profile and therefore assigned from the internal SAP code. To edit a profile, you must know what type of parameter you are looking for. When modifying a profile, the system will automatically include a comment in the file indicating the date, time, user ID of who did the modification, and what the old value of the parameter was. When finished editing a profile, you must first Copy the new values and then select Profile Save or click the Save icon to store the profile in the database. When saving profiles, the system automatically performs a consistency check. If you want the profile parameters of an edited profile to be effective the next time an instance is restarted, you have to transfer the modified profile to the operating system level. You do this by selecting from the menu Profile Activate, although commonly the system will automatically request you to activate the profile after it has been saved. A full example of editing profile parameters is included in the section "Example: Maintenance of an Instance Profile." Checking Profiles At any time, but especially after importing or modifying any of the system profiles, you should check the consistency of the profiles. This check includes from spell checking to verifying all the imposed conditions on parameters. The system, though, will automatically check when saving or activating, and presents a check log. When the SAP system checks a profile it also checks that all profiles are consistent among themselves; for example, it would not allow two different message servers in different profiles. To check the consistency of any profile, from the main screen, select the profile and version and click on the Check icon, or, from the menu, select Profile Check. When an application server is started, the system checks that the profile information stored in the database matches that of the operating system files. If there are differences, the alert monitor will display an alert message. You can always check and compare the profiles against the file on the operating system by entering the profile name in the input field and selecting from the menu Utilities Check all profiles of active server. Or you can compare against the profiles in the operation modes by selecting the menu option Utilities Check all profiles In operation modes. Also, you can compare the selected profile in the profile name input field with the active profile. Importing Individual Profiles When a profile has been modified at the operating system level or a new dialog instance has been installed, you should import the new profiles. First, you have to create a new profile and then you have to import it. On the initial maintenance screen (Fig. 11 2), enter the name of the profile and click on the Create icon, or select Profile Create from the menu. 393

Profile Maintenance Options The system presents the initial screen for entering the administration data, such as the description, the profile type, the file name (include the whole path), and the reference server. Enter the requested information and save your inputs. The system transfers the data to the database. Then proceed by selecting Profile Import on the basic profile maintenance transaction screen. The system displays a dialog box where you have to specify the profile file at the operating system level. To display the available files, click on the possible entries list arrow. The values for the profile will be transferred and checked for errors. You can now edit the profile and save it into the database. You can also use the copy function to make a copy for another profile with similar values. Deleting Profiles You have two options to delete profiles from the database: To delete a single profile, on the initial edit profile screen, enter the name and version in the corresponding input fields and then select Profile Delete Individual profile. To delete all versions of a profile, select Profile Delete All versions of a profile. The system will remove the entries from the database and will display a dialog box requesting whether you also want to delete the files at the operating system level. Automatic Adjustments of Buffer Pools in the Instance Profiles For every instance, R/3 includes several groups of memory buffers which are used for the communication among the instance work processes. A group of memory buffers is known as a pool. These pools are distributed in the shared memory segment of the server operating system and greatly depend on the memory size of the server. You cannot allocate more physical memory than available. Be sure to consider that memory is also used by the operating system processes and the database background processes. It is quite difficult to balance all the buffer size parameters in their corresponding tools. In previous versions it was a task mainly performed by the SAP specialist and was the cause of problems when starting the SAP instances when someone tried to manually adjust those pools. With the new profile maintenance tool, the procedure of adjusting buffer sizes in their respective memory pools has been automated, and the R/3 system presents the needed values compared with those offered by the system. If there are inconsistencies, an error message is displayed in the parameter list.
