The control panel gives you an overview of system activity. You can get information on alerts, performance, buffers, and system logs. You can check whether instances were started correctly and whether instances are running in the correct operation mode, that is, whether automatic operation mode switching is possible. If you are using profiles, you can use the control panel to check whether the profiles were changed, including changes made to comments, without activating them. When a profile is changed, you get an alert. To start the control panel, from the main CCMS menu, select Control/Monitoring Control Panel. Alternatively, enter transaction code RZ03 in the command field. A list of host systems and instances of your R/3 system is displayed, together with the status, alert text, and the active operation mode. From the control panel you can do the following: Start or stop instances Maintain operation modes and instances Log on to a host system or instance Display the R/3 system log and process traces Stop the R/3 system Display and maintain the alert thresholds of the system To perform operations on one server, simply position the cursor on the line with the server before performing the operation. It is not necessary to double click on the server to select it. However, to select more than one server, double click on each server. If the control panel displays a message in the Alert text column, you can find out the reason by selecting the server and then choosing Monitoring Status details. The system will display a dialog box with the reason and details for the alert. Many of the alerts are derived from deviations in the configuration data and the real data. Control Panel Views The information in the control panel can be displayed in several different ways, each one containing different data. Figure 11 13 shows the available views menu options. When in a view, you can click on the Next view or Previous view buttons on the application toolbar to navigate through all of them.

The System Monitor These views are as follows: Standard view. This is the default view when accessing the control panel. It shows initial alerts, operation mode, and server status information. Alert view. This is a list monitor which display the alerts of the main system components. From the alert details screen you can further display more specific alert messages and information by double clicking on any of the summary lines. Server status view shows only server status information. Performance view shows the number of logged on users, wait time, and response time for the dialog and update processes. Buffer quality view shows the buffer quality in percent collected for the last 90 minutes. Buffer directory view shows the number of directory entries that exist for each buffer type. Buffer memory view shows the statistics of the memory utilization for each buffer type. Dispatcher queues view shows the work process queues utilization statistics for the instance. Normally, this view should display 0 percent for all queues. A larger value might indicate that the system is having problems supporting the current workload. System log view shows the number and frequency of system log entries and the alert messages in the system log Memory management views allow you to either display absolute memory values including as swap or extended memory, or use percentage values by selecting relative values.

The SAP system monitor is a graphical global monitor which shows all the configured instances in an R/3 system. The database and the SAP instances are displayed in a networked graphical form with colored boxes representing the instances. Inside each of those colored boxes is information about the name of the instance, the host server, and the type and number of work processes running in the instance. From the system monitor you can do the following: Start and stop SAP instances Display instance details Display the alerts details for a selected instance Log on to an active SAP instance directly from the monitor Display system trace files Change the operation mode for an instance To access the system monitor, from the initial CCMS menu, select Control/Monitoring System Monitor. Figure 11 14 shows an example of this monitor. The colors of the boxes indicate the instance status. You can display a legend listing of possible statuses by selecting Settings Legend and then selecting a position.
