The alert monitor included in release 4.0 or R/3 includes a preconfigured basic monitor, offering an MT with nodes that can all be currently monitored. System managers can create their own personal monitors (that is, new MTs) for simplifying the activity of monitoring by suppressing nodes from the standard MT, or for differentiating types of monitoring. Additionally, system managers can organize monitors in groups, known as monitor sets. The monitor set tree is the higher level within the monitoring hierarchy of the alert monitor, and within it you can find the various monitoring trees or MTs. The process of creating a monitor set is based on copying a set that was already created. Initially it is necessary to copy one of the SAP standard sets in order to later maintain them with the required monitors and MTs. Creating a Monitor Creating a new monitor is quite convenient when starting from the basic monitor, which contains all the available monitoring elements. The process of creating a new monitor based on the basic monitor follows: From the initial R/3 screen, select Tools CCMS Control/Monitoring Alert Monitor (4.0), or alternatively, enter transaction code RZ20 in the command field. Expand the monitor sets in the Monitor Set screen, and select the basic monitor. Select the options Edit Load Monitor or click on the load monitor icon. Normally, the system displays the Open Alerts view from the basic monitor; if it does not, select the view by selecting Views Open alerts. Before selecting the option Monitoring Create, expand the MT depending on the monitor to be created and select the modes you wish to include in it. Figure 12 11 shows an example.

With the selected options, you can modify the settings and save them by choosing Monitor Save monitor or by clicking the Save icon on the standard toolbar. Enter the name of the new monitor in the input field. The system will display the Open Alert view of the new created monitor. Modifying a Monitor To modify a monitor, from any of the monitor views, select Monitor Change name if you want to change the monitor name, or select Monitor Change if you want to change the structure of the corresponding MT. In the latter case, the system will display the expanded structure of the basic monitor with the selected MTEs of the monitor that you want to change. If you want to expand the structure with new MTEs, just select them. If you want to delete some MTEs, just deselect them. Finally, save the changes by selecting Monitor Save monitor or by clicking on the save icon.

Navigating monitors basically means navigating through the MTs. Each monitor or MT has two possible views: Current status. Shows an overview of current alert values. Open alerts. Displays the nonprocessed alerts in the system. There are color codes for the MTE nodes that have the following meanings: Green. The component works correctly. Yellow. A warning alert has occurred. Red. A problem has occurred in the system. White. There is no information about this node that has been provided by any data supplier. When an MTE has an alarm, the corresponding color code is automatically transmitted to superior hierarchical nodes. The usual management of the 4.x alert monitor should start with displaying the current status of the corresponding monitor to determine the status of the monitored objects. Then display the Open Alerts view to check on possible problems or warnings that could have appeared in the system since the last control. Once 437

Navigating Across Monitors (Monitoring Tree) the cause of the problem has been analyzed and removed, the last step is to confirm the corresponding alert. Next is a brief overview of how to use the different views. Current Status View To reach one of the monitor views, double click on the corresponding monitor within the CCMS Monitor Sets screen. The system displays the last monitor view that was previously used. If you want to change the view, select it from the Views menu options, or click on the corresponding icon on the application toolbar. Figure 12 12 shows an example of the current status view of the basic monitor with administrator level display.

Expanding the MT nodes, you can reach the monitoring attributes nodes in which the system displays the most relevant information about the corresponding monitoring objects. You can get more information by clicking on the Display detail button on the application toolbar or selecting Edit Nodes(MTE) Display details. The system displays the relevant information about the monitoring object during the last 30 minutes and the last 24 hours. An example is shown in Fig. 12 13.

Navigating Across Monitors (Monitoring Tree) In cases where there is an analysis tool assigned for the MTE, from this view you can run the analysis by positioning on the selected MTE and running the option Edit Nodes(MTE) Analyze or by clicking the start analysis tool on the application toolbar. In the latter case, if the selected attribute does not have an associated analysis tool, there will be a message in the status bar. Open Alert View This view can be reached from the CCMS Monitor Sets (RZ20) by double clicking on the corresponding monitor. If the system displays the current status view, click on the Open alerts icon on the application toolbar. As in the current status view, you can expand the nodes with alarms, which can be distinguished based on their color, until you reach the corresponding attribute. Once the attribute is reached, you can display it and read the corresponding alert. If you don't want to navigate until you reach the attributes that are triggering the alerts, you can position on any red or yellow node and click on the Display Alerts button to activate the alert browser, which will display all the alerts pertaining to the selected node branch. The number of alerts displayed depends on the level of the selected node. Figure 12 14 shows an example of the alert browser screen.

The alert browser shows all the alerts sorted by alarm type and attribute, and includes all the utilities needed for selection and treatment, such as filters, ascending and descending orders, and so on. In both the alert browser and the screen corresponding to Open view, you have the option to confirm the corresponding alert by clicking on the Complete alerts button on the application toolbar, or by selecting Edit Alerts Complete alerts when the corresponding MTE attribute is selected. From either view type, you can establish the level of detail to display, and under which type of activity should it be displayed. These options can be found on any monitor view by selecting Extras Display options.
