For the R/3 system, the normal operation of an output device (printer) requires that all the logical components are correctly defined and configured. The SAP system includes most of the predefined settings for most output device types, so, actually, administrators only have to define new ones when using devices or special formats or character sets which are not included in the standard SAP system. Figure 14 11 shows a simple diagram of these output devices' logical components. There are some elements which are only needed for SAPscript output.

The following list contains an overview of the purpose of each component of an output device: Output device (printer). It's the actual physical printer as configured at the operating system level. Device type. The device type is actually the interface between the output device and the other components. It contains the full printer characteristics and attributes. A device type definition can be used for all printers of the same type. OTF driver. It's the driver used by SAPscript to format output for devices of this type. The name OTF driver is derived from the function accomplished, since it is the component in charge of converting the internal SAPscript format known as Output Text Format (OTF) to the native format of the device. Character sets. This component specifies which character sets are available for printing or display in devices of this type. These sets contain the coding which make a device generate a particular 487

Defining New Device Types character or symbol. SAPscript fonts. For SAPscript output, the R/3 system maintains its own fonts, font metrics, and character sets, which are used for printing and formatting text with nonproportional fonts. These fonts determine the appearance of the characters: Courier, Times Roman, Arial, and others. If the output device does not support any of these fonts, SAPscript converts them to a similar one supported by the device. Print controls. This component contains the printer command sets, making them available to the SAP spool system. The command sets contain the escape sequence needed for controlling typical printer operations, such as setting boldface, starting new page, and so on. Formats (paper types). This component specifies how the output will appear on the paper. It mainly contains the settings for establishing paper sizes, such as Letter, DINA4, and so forth. SAPscript page formats. It's only used by SAPscript output and specifies the printable area and whether the orientation of the format is portrait or landscape. Device initialization. This is the group of printer commands which are used for configuring a particular output device for printing within the SAP system. A device initialization is made up of the device type definition together with the defined formats.

Creating a new device type is needed in those cases when the SAP standard software does not include your particular printer or device type. A new device type can be defined either from scratch or by copying an existing one and then modifying it. The same device type can be used for printers which are of the same model. To define a new device type, from the initial Spool Administration screen, select the Full administration screen by clicking on the corresponding button on the application toolbar. With Full administration you can display the device type options. Next, select the Device types push button. The system displays the available device types. On this screen click on the Change icon. To define a new device type from scratch, click on the Create icon on the application toolbar. If you want to define it based on another similar device, click on the Copy from push button. After selecting one of the two options, you will get a new screen where you can enter the new device type, name, and other data such as driver for SAPscript and printer character set. Depending on the option selected, the new screen will be either the Create device type screen, where none of the screen fields have default values, or the Copy device type from XXXXXX screen, where default values inherited from the source (copied) device are used. Figure 14 12 shows what this screen looks like when a device type is being created from scratch.

Defining New Device Types Figure 14 12: Screen for defining a new device type. Enter a name following SAP standard naming conventions for customer objects (starting with character Z) and right below, there are the following fields: Name. Enter here a brief definition or description for the device type. Driver. Name of the print driver for SAPscript. The driver makes the conversion from the output format of SAPscript OTF to the print format of the device type. Clicking on the possible entries list arrow displays the available standard entries. The most common drivers for defining new device types for common printers are HPL2. For standard HP Laserjet printers working in HP PCL4 or PCL5 printing formats or for compatible printers. POST. For standard POSTSCRIPT printers. PRES. Drivers for Kyocera printers working in PRESCRIBE mode. STN2. Standard driver for line printers (new driver). STND. Standard driver for line printers (old driver). Page printer. You can select this check box when the printer device is capable of preformatting a whole page or document before it's actually printed, for example, with the POSTSCRIPT drivers. Printer character set. Since printers might use different character sets than those of the application servers or host systems, the spool system needs to indicate the character set for the device types. In this field, you must enter the code for the character set which is supported by the device type. You can look up the list of supported character sets in the printer manual. The character set represents the possible characters used by the system with its equivalence in the ASCII or EBCDIC coding. The ASCII character set might vary among different vendors. There are several widely used codes according to some standard normalization organizations, such as ISO, but also some vendors have come out with their own character sets and coding, such as IBM, DEC, HP, SNI, or SAP itself. You can click on the possible entries arrow to display the list of available character sets. There are three input fields for character sets. Only the first is used by the system, so normally the three input fields have the same value. The character set chosen for the device type must be supported by the printers using such device types. For example, if for a Digital printer you select the character set code 2101, check that it corresponds to the character set supported by the printer, either in native mode or by emulation. For instance, for device type DECLA75P, there is the character set 2101. This character set represents the correspondence between the characters and their ASCII representations, depending on the printer type and operative mode. For example, the character 1 (one) is represented in ASCII as the hexadecimal value 31 or decimal value 49. Generally the ASCII codes for the first 128 values (from 0 to 127) are quite standard. The most noticeable differences start in the extended ASCII mode, when representing the special characters, tildes, umlauts, national characters, and so on. You can display and compare the character sets with the device type being defined from the Spool Administration (full administration) screen by selecting the radio button Character sets, and then clicking on the Display button. The system displays a list with all available character sets. For example, select character set 2103 and then the option Edit character set. The system displays the character set definition for the code 2103 as shown in Fig. 14 13.
