Page formats are used for specifying page attributes, such as the orientation and the size. With this information, SAPscript can distribute and fill the page so that the text can fit correctly. For example, a page format can be used or defined for printing four labels on a page. If you use a standard page format for this operation, the standard listing for the labels is truncated. However, with a page format that widens the logical print window for SAPscript, the operation can be successfully completed. To define a new page format, from the initial Spool Administration screen, click the Page formats button. The system displays the List of Page Formats screen. On this screen, you can either click on the Create push button or the Copy from push button. The system shows a new screen for creating a new page format. To be able to perform the Device initialization function, it is necessary to have some formats (paper types) defined. In other words, for initializing any device type defined in the system, thus making it available for printing, it must have an associated output format that was previously defined. When defining a format, you need to identify which page format is going to be used, so that it can be assigned the right orientation. For example, the paper type DINA4 can be used with two page formats DINA4, one with landscape orientation and the other one with portrait orientation. To display or manage available paper types, from the initial Spool Administration screen, select the Formats button. Figure 14 20 shows the list of the standard defined paper types.

Managing Formats The SAP spool system reserves the paper type formats starting with an X for printing ABAP lists and reports. For example the X_65_80 format means to print every page with 65 lines and 80 characters wide. The X formats use nonproportional fonts, assuming that printers use a 12 inch paper length. Formats for SAPscript For SAPscript, the names of Page formats and Formats (Paper types), must match; for example, the customer page format ZINCH12 must have a corresponding customer format also known as ZINCH12. The list of the standard formats used by SAPscript can be found in the BC Printing Guide within the online documentation.

A device initialization in the SAP spool system consists of associating a device type with a format, to which a set of initialization commands is assigned which are specific for the output device. From the full administration setting of the Spool Administration screen, click on the Device types button. The system will display the list of device types. Select the device to be associated with a format by positioning the cursor over its name, and click on the Formats push button on the application toolbar. A new screen appears, showing the list of formats for device types defined for selected device type. You can select any format from the list by double clicking on the format required. The system will display a new screen for maintaining the format associated with the device type. Figure 14 21 shows an example.

Each one of these lines represents a set of commands or escape sequences for the device type, which are meant to perform the assigned functions described to the right of every line, for example, the function Printer initialization. You can display or edit the available functions. To edit, click on the line and select the Edit option or just double click on it. The system displays the edit screen for the control file (escape sequences) for the selected function for the device. In Fig. 14 22, you can see the edit screen for the function Printer initialization.
