SAP makes the following recommendations to eliminate risks as far as possible when backing up and restoring your database: Make sure that you have activated the archiving of the online redo logs (mode ARCHIVELOG) in all databases. Make sure that the mirrored control files are stored on separate disks. Mirror the online redo logs on separate disks (at operating system level and/or using Oracle resources). The mirroring of online redo log files, supported by Oracle, can be set up when installing the database system. Install online redo log files, offline redo logs files (archived redo log files), and data files to separate disks. Make sure that the block sizes (8K) of the database system and the operating system are the same. This might differ on some operating systems. Verify the most important database parameters. Familiarize yourself with the tablespace structure of the SAP system and monitor the critical tablespaces. These recommendations are applicable independently of the chosen backup strategy, and regardless to whether brbackup is the tool for performing the backups.

It's a consistent backup of the database after it has been shut down. The SAP system is not available while the backup runs, but recovery procedures are easier. Online. Runs while SAP system is active, so there is no availability interruption. It might have some negative effects on performance, so it's better to schedule online backups at times where there is not much online activity. To perform online backups, it is mandatory that the database runs with the ARCHIVELOG mode enabled.

SAP Backup Concept and Security Recommendations Since release 4.0, it is possible to perform a Consistent Online Backup. This procedure includes a database backup in online mode, containing logically consistent data as well as the offline redo logs files that are generated during the backup. These offline files are all saved to the same volume as database files. The init<SID>.sap initialization profile contains the default value for database backup with brbackup. Right after a new SAP installation, the default value is normally complete offline backup to local tape without compression. To change the default value, you have to edit the initialization profile. However, you can interactively select other values while using the brbackup utility. Before running the first backup, you must initialize some tapes and possibly edit the initialization profile to check or edit the tape device and tape length. There are many options within the backup. Some are not available on all operating systems, and they also differ among sapdba versions. Here some of the most common options are introduced: Backup function. Default value is to perform a normal backup, but selecting this option will display an additional menu for selecting the required backup operation. You have to choose from one of the following options: Normal backup. This is the normal and default value when the tapes need not be initialized. Initialize BRBACKUP tape. Select this function for initializing one or more tapes. When performing this operation, the system will display a reduced menu for selecting additional options: Check before initialization = no. If you opt not to check the label, you can initialize any tapes and even overwrite existing SAP volumes. Check label before initialization = yes. If you select this, the system will check the label and only allow for initializing SAP tapes when the locking period has expired. Number of tapes. This is to specify the number of tapes to be initialized. Show information in tape header. The system will display the information contained in the tape header, if any. Since the backup always writes a tape header in all volumes used, this function is useful for checking the type, date, label, and backup type on the tapes. Determine compression rates. If you want to perform backups with compression, you must run this utility so that the system can estimate the compression rate for the backups. This rate will be calculated by simulating a backup of the files specified with option g Objects for backup. Running this function can take as long as performing an actual backup. If you want, you can specify two or three big tablespaces. Notice, though, that the compression rate can change as the system is in productive operation, since the fill level of the data files can rapidly change. So plan to run this function once a month or once every other month. Parameter file. The default value is init<SID>.sap, but you can use different initialization profile files. For example, you might wish to create a specific file for calculating compression rates, for initializing tapes, for performing different backup types, and so on. With this method, you avoid having to change parameters online all the time. To enter another parameter file, select this option and specify the name of the file. Confirm backup parameters. The default value is no, which suppresses some of the brbackup confirmation messages. When set to yes, the system will stop and display all the confirmation messages. Then the user must confirm the function to continue. 570

SAP Backup Concept and Security Recommendations Language. You can select the language for the brbackup messages. Only English (default) and German are available. Backup device type. The system will display a list of available device types supported by brbackup. The default value is to perform backups to local tape devices, but you can also choose: disk. Select this option to perform backup to disk volumes. pipe. Select this option to backup to tape devices in a remote system using commands that must be specified in the parameter initialization file. tape_auto. Select this option for performing backups to tape devices that support automatic tape loading and switching. Selecting this option will suppress the messages for changing tapes. pipe_auto. It's a combination of the last two options. It's used to back up to an automatic tape loading and switching device located in a remote system. util_file and util_file_online. These are the options that allow for third party backup solutions integrated with brbackup. You must enter here the name of a third party program that must comply with the SAP backup interface program backint. Please refer to SAP for a list of certified backup partners and solutions complying with the backint interface. When using an external backup program, if necessary, you can use the Backup utility parameter file option to specify a file containing parameters needed for the external backup solution. disk_copy. This can be used for copying the database to a disk using the same directory structure. tape_box and pipe_box. These are used for jukeboxes and autoloaders. In the first case (tape_box) the devices must be locally accessible; in the second case (pipe_box) they can be remotely accessible. Objects for backup. The following options can be specified: all. It's the default value for backing up the whole database. all_data. This option can be used for backing up all the data tablespaces, excluding indexes. sap_dir / ora_dir. Choose this option to backup the SAP directories and the Oracle directories without the database data files. tablespace name. This option is used for backing up a single tablespace. File_ID or File ID1 File ID2. Select this option to back up one or more files by specifying the Oracle file ID or a file ID area. Generic Path. Use this option for backing up a particular file, specifying the whole path. You can also specify a generic directory path, in which case the whole directory contents will be backed up. Object list. You can specify to back up several objects by separating the names with commas. Enter password interactively. This option can be used to enter interactively the database administrator password. The default option is no. Query only. When selecting this option, the system displays three possibilities: no. It's the default value for starting the selected backup function. The backup will be normally started. with tape check. No backup will be performed. The system will check and display which backup tape or tapes will need to be mounted for the backup. It checks that the required tapes are mounted in the drive. without tape check. No backup will be performed. The system will only display which tape or tapes are needed for performing the backup.

When none are specified, the system will use the next sequential volume as specified in the initialization profile, and as recorded in the backup logs. If you need to specify more than one tape, you must separate every label with commas. Compress. When selecting this option, the system will display the three possible entries: no. It's the default value for performing backups without compression. yes. Software compression is performed, using previously calculated compression rates, with backup function Determine compression rate. When this option is used, the tool will compress the backup files into the working directory before transferring to the backup device. hardware. Select this option for backup devices with built in hardware compression. Verification after backup. Choose whether you want the utility to perform a verification of the backed up files. Verification will markedly increase the total backup time. The default option is no verification. Backup type. Use this option to specify the most important parameter for running the backup. Options available are: offline. This is the default option. You can launch an offline backup if the SAP system has been shut down. The brbackup utility will stop the database itself. offline_force. The system will shut down immediately without checking if the SAP system is up and running. online. This option will perform a backup of the database while the SAP system is running. Operating the database in ARCHIVELOG mode is mandatory. online_cons. This is the option used for performing consistent online backups, where the archived redo logs generated during the online backup are copied to the same backup volume. offline_standby. This mode is one of the options for supporting backup on a standby database. With this mode the standby database is stopped. This configuration is only used in disaster recovery. offline_stop. This is an option used for standby database configuration. The database is not started after backup, but set to mount standby status. online_split and offline_split. These two modes, introduced in release 4.x, support the split mirror disks backup, which is especially suitable for large installations for avoiding downtime. The online_split mode sets the tablespaces temporarily to backup mode while the disks are being split. The offline_split mode stops the database while the disks are being split. Level of parallel execution. Indicates the number of possible copy processes that can be running in parallel. The default value 0 indicates that the number of processes will be the same as the number of available backup devices. After entering the needed options in the menu and mounting the required tapes or other selected backup devices, start the backup by selecting option s. While the backup is being run, the screen displays the backup size, the progress, and the estimated end time for completion. It will also display a system message when an error occurs or when the backup is finished. Running a brbackup writes backup logs in a summary log file back<SID>.log under the sapbackup directory. The progress of a backup is left in a detail log file b<timestamp>.<ext>. The brbackup utility can be also used at the command line, which allows for writing shell scripts for automating and scheduling backups.
