Either as an independent section within the procedures guide or as an appendix for the developing methodology used in R/3 environments, it is important to define the rules that must apply for the transport system. 6 is devoted to explaining the workbench organizer and transport system concepts and management. Refer to that chapter and SAP official documentation for additional operative information. The R/3 workbench organizer and transport system takes care of controlling quite automatically new developments and corrections; however, a misuse of available options can lead to unwanted results. To avoid such results, some type of procedures are needed. The following is a list with the topics that should be extended to define the customer specific rules: 1. Transport system setup rules The configuration is only done in the transport domain controller. When any changes are made to the configuration, this will be distributed using the available TMS options. There will be a virtual system, known as DUM, used for special transports. Transport routes will be defined as standard configuration for groups of three systems, such as development, QAS, and production. 615

Organizing the Workbench Organizer and Managing Transport Requests 2. Development classes Are defined in the development procedures Do not use local ($TMP) development classes except for training purposes Make sure a new development class is transported to or defined for all systems in the group Changes to object development classes are not allowed and must be requested of the system administrator 3. Naming conventions Follow SAP standard naming conventions 4. System change options System change options for production systems, such as global settings, will be set to Not Modifiable so that no repository objects or customization can be performed in these systems. System change options for development and test systems are set to Modifiable. If consultants or SAP notes indicate that emergency repairs are required in the production system, the system manager will temporarily set the system change option to Modifiable. As soon as the repairs are released and confirmed, the system change option must be set back to its original value. 5. Tasks and change requests Tasks are assigned by the development responsible for the users. These tasks will be released by their developers. Change requests will be created by the development responsible, which is also responsible for releasing them. For small developments and corrections, the developer can create her or his own tasks and change requests. It is forbidden to use another group's change requests. 6. Repairs Are strictly forbidden except when coming from a SAP note Apply only if strictly necessary for applications Are performed in development systems, tested, and, if accepted, transported to other systems Are not to be left unconfirmed 7. Performing imports Imports can be used to test a system at any time, except when receiving other indications. Imports are always performed by the system or transport administrator after receiving the import request form. Imports to productive environments must be preceded by imports to test environments, when possible. For performance reasons, importing to a production environment is restricted to once a day at 2:00 A.M., right after backup. For security reasons, only imports that are in the buffer before 8:00 P.M. will be performed. In urgent or exceptional situations, partial or special imports to a productive system can be performed after receiving management authorization. Developers are responsible for checking both export and import logs. 8. Special management options Transporting between different clients in the same system is restricted to the system administrator. 616

Information Integrity Issues Bear in mind that a wrong transport or an out of sequence import can cause a lot of damage to your system, so be sure to establish some organization and rules to avoid such situations. In the preceding example procedures, it is significant that the import to production system is performed right after backing up the system, so that at least you could recover the state of the system as it was before the transport in case some critical errors occurred. You can surely come out with additional rules for managing and controlling your transport system.
