Experience in several SAP implementations has led to the discovery of some operational laws for keeping a SAP system in a productive state. This list is not complete; you can probably make it longer, or you can make it shorter by automating most of these laws in fewer, more complete checks. These are some laws for the technical administration and operating of the SAP systems, and in general for the planning and design of the technical infrastructure: Daily tasks are daily! Do not undersize your SAP systems. Be especially generous allocating the amount of memory for 629

SAP Operation and Maintenance Basic Laws your application servers. Backup strategy is the cornerstone of safety. Do not leave room for unconsidered events to happen. Have enough preconfigured disks ready for adding extra space to your SAP file systems. Check database critical objects. Do not let database file systems and data files grow beyond 85 percent. Get (ask for) a test server. It can be useful for operating system, database, or SAP upgrades; also for SAP transports and for a sound and safe backup and recover strategy. So, before taking anything to a productive state, test it. Log your incidences from the very beginning, no matter how silly the solution may have been. The question is not to find out a wrong permission in a file but to avoid the situation the next time it happens (and it will!). Monitor your network. SAP client/server R/3 relies on the network. So, even if the SAP system is up and running, a network (not nervous) breakdown will negatively impact the availability of productive deployment of the system. Do not forget your printers. (Have you ever seen the face of a trucker waiting for his transport route for more than half an hour ) Think of what procedures are in place in case SAP becomes unavailable for a long period of time (long is, of course, a subjective qualifier, which can go from 10 minutes to several days). Do not think of how much money the company loses because of this (can cause depression and insomnia). Contract the Early Watch service. Prevention is better than cure! Design and communicate a clear procedure for end user technical support. Don't just put a nice framework on a Web page! Optimize the infamous Z programs (customer programs). For an unknown reason, these are always the programs with longest runtimes. Put a high availability system in your (SAP) life.

SAP has built a worldwide service network as part of its strategy to support and communicate with its customers in the most effective way. Service has been a key factor for the success of the SAP R/3 product, both for its mother company as well as for its customers, who rely on the R/3 applications for handling mission critical business processes. SAP service comprises all phases in the life of a SAP R/3 project: from implementation and preproductive states to the daily productive operation of the system. SAP offers a wide range of service packages in an effort to cover the whole spectrum of customer service needs. SAP is currently providing most of its online information and support services through SAPnet (sapnet.sap.com). The former Online Service System (OSS) is now called SAPnet R/3 front end. 1 of this book includes an overview of SAP services, but you can find extensive and current information about these and other services by visiting the SAP Web page at http://www.sap.com.

As previously indicated, to use the described online services, SAP customers must set up a remote connection to one of the SAP support servers. The official SAP manual, Remote Connection to the R/3 Online Services, contains detailed information about this process. In that guide, you can also find addresses and phone numbers of official institutions, support centers, and service providers that can help you configure your connection. The required forms are also included. Additionally, SAP offers a service package, rcPack, for establishing remote connections. The Remote Connection to the R/3 Online Services guide normally comes bundled with the software kit, and you can also find it in the Online Help or Print Files CD ROMs. The type of remote connection and the service providers available will vary according to your geographical situation. SAP guides you through the process of choosing what is the best option for you. SAP provides several support centers to assist customers with technical questions regarding the remote connections and configurations of the components involved. A simple diagram of the remote connection is presented in Fig. A 1.
