The SAProuter is a SAP program located in the runtime directory, /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run/saprouter, which is part of the R/3 system installation. The SAProuter works like an intermediate agent in the network for connecting R/3 systems. It can be set up to act like a firewall system, which grants or denies access to your network or R/3 servers. You have to configure SAProuter for connecting to the SAPnet R/3 front end as well as for enabling SAP to perform online services. With the SAProuter program running on one of your local R/3 servers, all the presentation servers (PCs with the SAPGUI) and all the application servers can connect to the SAP network using just one connection point. Then, it is sufficient to define the link between the SAP server and the host running the SAProuter, and between the clients and the SAProuter. This procedure efficiently divides the communication between the application servers and the clients. For SAP, the whole customer installation (the group of R/3 servers, both database and application) can be accessed via a single TCP/IP address, which is the one in which SAProuter is running. This means, then, establishing a remote connection between the customer and SAP is therefore reduced to reaching the customer's SAProuter host. With the proper configuration, the SAProuter can be made into an effective instrument for controlling and managing SAP communication within and outside of the customer network. Network connections between R/3 systems that are established through SAProuter present as an additional advantage that the SAP administrator does not have to route every system that is part of the R/3 network. You can even use SAProuter for establishing connections between servers when there are nonunique TCP/IP addresses. The SAP support server will only need access to the server that is running the SAProuter at your end. So, for example, it can allow the Early Watch staff to perform its service to a different SAP system in your network than the one running SAProuter. The SAProuter program can make indirect connections between two different IP networks (different subnets), but the access is restricted to the application layer. This means that it allows connection between a client software (for example, SAPGUI) and the application server software (R/3 services). SAProuter is completely hardware independent, since SAP has used a network interface layer (NI layer), which provides a common interface for all the hardware platforms and operating systems. SAProuter is a program that, in the most simple form, just needs to be started in the server that is going to act as the R/3 SAProuter server. It can also be started in other servers as an intermediate point of access. There are basically four steps to follow for setting up SAProuter: 1. Test it with the niping program. 2. Create or edit the route permission table. 3. Start the program. 4. Define the route strings for network access with SAProuter. This process is quite straightforward, but before going into the details, you have to understand how to define route strings which are the TCP service connection ports used by SAProuter. Route Strings and Service Ports To use SAProuter for establishing connections, the programs that call it must define the route in the form of a route string. A route string contains an entry for each host server it needs to reach. If there is more than one host entry, the preceding ones must be running SAProuter. You can configure SAProuter to access multiple hosts and multiple services. This is accomplished by defining route strings. The route string might contain as many entries, or substrings, as needed. A single route strings syntax is
