For example, a server can be running the message server for the rest of the system, but at the same time be a client of the update service which is provided by a different server. The SAP R/3 system is made up of a group of servers and a group of services. Depending on the function they perform, there are three types of servers: Database server. Basically contains the database engine and associated processes. The database layer contains the database system used by all servers.
