The workbench organizer and transport system distinguish between four different types of systems within a group of connected R/3 systems: Integration systems Consolidation systems Recipient systems Special development systems With these system types, the development and transports can be controlled in an orderly manner. This does not mean you need four different systems or that this is a strict scheme to follow. Special development systems are normally not required and are mostly used by SAP itself to develop new or special applications. They won't be dealt with in this chapter. 167

These system types are defined when configuring the workbench organizer and the transport system in special tables which hold those settings.

When user installations only have one system for development and one for production, the consolidation system can be the production system. The consolidation systems contain a functioning version of the development. In larger configurations with three types of systems, the production systems are set as recipient systems and receive the transports previously imported into the consolidation system. Integration Systems Integration systems correspond functionally to development systems, where applications or customizing settings is done. When the new developments have been tested, the normal transport route is from the integration system to the consolidation system. In non productive consolidation systems, the developments are tested using test data for later transport to the recipient systems. The restriction on the integration system is that the system does not permit originals to be transported to a consolidation system. Read this sentence carefully: you can transport from your source system (integration system) your originals (new developments) to a target system (consolidation system). However, the system attributes of the objects in the target system indicate that the system original is your source system, which is fine. What is really restricted by the system is overwriting an original object with the same object with a different attribute as source system. There are, however, special mechanisms for achieving this change. Later in this chapter there is a section about transport types and special transports. Consolidation Systems Consolidation systems are set up to receive transports from integration systems. Functionally, they can correspond to either test systems or productive systems. For example, in a group of just two SAP systems, the productive system is configured as the consolidation system. In a group of more than two systems, the consolidation system can be the test system for the new developments and can be used to distribute the new developments to the productive environment, which are then set up as recipient systems. Once you have established that your developments are free of errors, you can import them into the recipient systems. The users testing the consolidation system have to arrange this with the system administrator responsible for carrying out the transport. Original objects transported from integration systems to consolidation systems cannot be corrected, but repaired. But, in case an object which has been transported needs to be corrected, the best way is to make the correction in the integration system and transport it back to the consolidation system instead of making a repair. Avoid making repairs as much as possible, or only make them if instructed to do so by the SAP 168

The development class to which an objects belongs is what sets the integration and consolidation system for a development object. Recipient Systems Recipient systems are those systems that can receive transports when these have successfully been imported previously into the consolidation system. In order for this process to work, in the workbench organizer settings, all the recipient systems have to subscribe to the consolidation systems. This is technically accomplished by making an entry in the TASYS table. The section about setting up the workbench organizer later in this chapter includes more information about how to do this. The recipient systems normally are able to receive only transports of copies when these were previously imported in a consolidation system.
