form of loose routing is not defined within the IMS. The IMS procedures call for strict routing to ensure that all requests and responses always follow the same path used during registration. The REPLY-TO header is still supported within the IMS, but its use is not necessarily for routing of responses. It is simply used to identify the direct address of the device, but requests and responses are still routed through the CSCF entities within the network. Other proxies may be bypassed, however.

This header is used by entities to identify any SIP extensions that must be supported by the other entities. This is similar to the PROXY-REQUIRE header discussed previously, with the exception that this is sent by devices rather than proxies. This header is needed because SIP extensions may not be supported in every network (and consequently by every device). If a device is sending a request using specific services that are enabled through a SIP extension, then those extensions must be identified to the other endpoint to ensure the session can be supported.

pected to be unavailable. It can also be used with 4xx responses to indicate when the called party expects to be available again. The parameters would indicate the duration of time and possibly the time when the calling party could try to reach the called party again. Optionally a message such as In a Meeting can be provided as part of the response to identify why the party is rejecting a call or why the called party is not available.

Route This header is used along with the RECORD-ROUTE header when strict routing is implemented (as is the case in the IMS). When a request is being sent, the RECORD-ROUTE header records the addresses of each of the entities in the call path. The response then inserts these addresses in the ROUTE headers (there are typically multiple headers). The headers are listed in the order of the route. In other words, the addresses are shown in the same order they are routed through. The routers then use this for routing the responses to the next hop in the network.
ROUTE: <sip:Raleigh@bellhead.com>
Server
This header allows the server (the recipient of a request) to communicate the software version being used by the server to process the request. There are many uses for this information, dependent on implementation.
Structure of the SIP Protocol
Care should be taken with this header, as information regarding software versions could be a security risk. Hackers could use this information to obtain the version of Symbian operating system resident on a cell phone, for example, and then send a virus or Trojan to that device. Operators should use encryption to prevent this information from being read by other than the end devices in a session.
SERVER: Symbian OS 8.0
Subject
This is much like the subject line in e-mail. It is provided as a means of sharing additional information about the session for display to the user. For example, if used for an emergency broadcast feature, the SUBJECT header would contain the actual alert message (such as Thunderstorm warnings for Johnston County ), while the PRIORITY header would contain the priority for the session. The SUBJECT header can also contain text displayed on the end device for a call. The sender may wish to have the message Answer the phone! pop up when the call begins ringing on the called party s phone (subject to call servers supporting such a function). There are many other implementations for the SUBJECT header dependent on operator implementation.
