When an Outrigger Represents Groups The word group has been used to describe the bridge table in these examples, because it is used to bundle a set of attributes into a group. Don t allow this terminology to confuse you. The bridge table is an association table, linking together the things on either side of it. This will help you through situations in which the multi-valued attribute is itself a group. For example, an employee dimension may be linked to an outrigger representing employee groups. These groups may represent committees, unions, or other associations. The groups are represented by an outrigger. The bridge associates each employee with the groups of which she is a member.

TIP When the outrigger is a group, try not to use the word group to describe the bridge. Doing so will lead to confusion. The standard bridge table caveats apply when multi-valued attributes are real-world groups. Any employee may be a member of more than one group. If groups are brought into the query, the employee will be double-counted. This may or may not be desired, and controls will need to be put in place to mitigate the risk of double-counting. ETL developers will have their work cut out for them, and it will be necessary to plan how source changes will impact each component of the final design.

Folding the Outrigger into the Bridge If there are only one or two multi-valued attributes, the outrigger table may be deemed unnecessary. The attributes can be placed in the bridge table, simplifying the configuration. For example, the industry table in Figure 9-10 can be eliminated by placing the industry code and name directly into the industry_group table. This approach will reduce the number of tables and joins in the solution. Industry names will be stored redundantly, but this is a common feature of dimension tables. It will be necessary to index the table appropriately, and also to take care that industry names appear identically each time they repeat. Resolving the Many-to-Many Relationship An attribute bridge table usually shares a manyto-many relationship with the dimension table it supports. As mentioned earlier in this chapter, many tools cannot abide such relationships. Although it is possible to design, build, and use a design like this, the relationship may get in the way of optimal configuration of the database or business intelligence tool, and some modeling tools may not be able to represent it. In these cases, the relationship can be resolved in two ways. The first option is to break the bridge table down into two tables: a table with one row for each group, and a membership table. The membership table serves as an intersect between the group and the outrigger, resolving the many-to-many relationship in the same way that the dimension bridge was resolved in Figure 9-7. The group table will have exactly one column, and its content will consist entirely of key values. An example appears in Figure 9-11. Here, the many-to-many relationship between customer and industry grouping has been resolved by altering the group table. In this design, the table has one row for each group. Each row consists of a single column, identifying the group. The set of industries that associates with the group is now captured in group_membership, which looks exactly like the original bridge table.
